We have bought a few clients in the past actually - so I guess we are on the opposite side of the spectrum.

When selling the customers - it is best to get an email first I would say from the owner and then one from the new owner. Both should coordinate their emails accordingly. And give all contact information for both parties. If the new owner can do anything - move files, etc - do that. The more things the new owner can do, the better to help the transition and show the clients that it can be done.
