reducing mp3 file size - 10/30/2001 20:35:00
I have a 3.93MB Mp3 file used for some background music on my home page - that takes far too long to download. Is there a way of reducing the file size of an MP3 or do I have to put it into another format? The Mp3 file is an audio of a grand piano - I would like to keep that sound quality if possible.

MP3 compression is the possibly one of the best forms of compression available.I suggest you take a sound bite or sample of about 30s of music. the convert it to an MP3 and use that intead. If your clever about it you can create a loop which is invisible, unless you have a lot of text to read per page people will move on by the time the sounds loops. If your considerate enough to put sound for people to list too then please be considerate enough to allow us to trun it off (office browsing and all that) ------------------ Stuart Steele stuart@stuweb.co.uk http://www.stuweb.co.uk

Stuey probably gave you the best advice (reduce the size then loop it), but if you know your server pretty well, you could try to stream it instead of making it a download, that way it comes out in packets that are streamed and played instead of downloading first, then playing.Your server would have to have back-end support for playing streaming music though. Check out shoutcast.com for possibilities. Derek

you could resample the mp3 to a lower bitrate.the quickest download format would probably be a midi file ------------------ Spooky wannabe ------------------

Thank you for your reply. I did not make the original MP3 file - is there a free/easy-to-use program I can download to reduce the file to 30secs of music? quote: Originally posted by Stuey: MP3 compression is the possibly one of the best forms of compression available.I suggest you take a sound bite or sample of about 30s of music. the convert it to an MP3 and use that intead. I have got my MP3 file down to 515K. Is there anyway of reducing it lower without losing the quality of the grand piano sound? Another format possibly?

Microsoft claims that the Windows Media Audio (WMA) Format is smaller with the same quality, but we're talking a matter of a few KB's. And WMA is not as widely supported by media players as is MP3. If you want the "real" piano sound (not the digital MIDI sound), it sounds as though you've gotten it about as small as you are going to get it (assuming you want the whole song, and not just a small portion of it that you can loop). I looked a little bit at the streamng media and it looked like a lot of work to host on your own server. Derek
