How'my doing so far? - 2/17/2006 16:55:34
I'm trying to build a "simple" site for my daughter. I have limited ability (but a lot of patience) and would like some input from you folks. The site is hosted by Tom.

Overall a nice look and the photos are really excellent.

A couple of points jumped out at me straight away. First the blinking text (how can you miss it) - pleeeeaase lose it!!!! The blink tag is just soooo 1990s, and a big no-no from an accessibility point of view. It's very distracting and IMHO detracts from the site rather than adding anything too it. Second point, that font (Bradley Hand ITC) isn't at all easy to read and anything that makes life hard for visitors isn't good - also, it's not a common font, so it's likely that a number of visitors to the site won't have that font installed on their machine, so it's not going to display how you intended. You'd be much better sticking to a plain sans serif font (easier to read on the screen).

Overall though, a good start. :)

well there's no blinking text now so you must have changed it. I clicked on 2 links and the "...just fabulous jewelry" comes in late. I mean it's the LAST thing to load. But a good overall effort

Bet your using IE :)

Anyway in firefox there is blinking text and it is a bit distracting and it makes it hard to read.

The Necklaces page seems to me to be a bit long it may put people off having to scroll down that far to then have to scroll all the way back up to get back to the nav buttons (which may make them think all the pages are that long)

Other than that i think the site looks nice :)

This is the offending code (text decoration). Darkside's right, IE ignores the blink tag (<hehe> finally I found something in IE's favour! :)). The blink thing was originally a Netscape thing which'll be why IE doesn't see it.

Thanks for the heads up on the text effect. I just installed a copy of Firefox and couldn't figure out why the damn text was blinking. Dont remember checking that off.
but...It won't be the last thing I'll screw up.
BTW... all the pix were made on a scanner. Go figure.

the images look strange being lit from below rather than the more traditionl 'from above' or top left/top right and maybe a border aroudn them would be good so they don't look like they are pasted on the page maybe the same colour as the text or a shade of that colour

Setup looks great you might want to change the font style and color its hard to read for me on some of the item descriptions.

Thanks to all for the feedback. I'm still messing with it as you can see. I switched to Verdana in a few spots and went white in the descriptions but damn ,I can't let go of the Bradley Hand. I need therapy! :)

I have to agree with Darkside on this. I looked at other jewellery pages and they were over long too. Maybe you could chop them up into more, smaller pages? I tried to find themes that would describe various selections like colour, gemstones used or string material ( silver, suede etc.) maybe you (or your daughter :)) could group them better?

The images are stunning btw.

i absolutely agree... i don't like the pages being so long. maybe you could group them and have sublinks in the respective pages.

OK. I see your point!
Is there a way to devide these pieces into...say Page 1, Page 2, etc with out re-building the whole catagory/page.
We already played with type catagories and realized it was hopeless as there are thousands of types and stones & jewels(or so she tells me as I know squat about jewelry).
How do I create a sub page?
See I told you I had limited ability!:)

You could try making more pages of Necklaces and add page links like....... page 1 , page 2 , page 3 to each page somewhere at the top

I'd just make a number of copies of the page, then delete all you don't want on page 1 and re-save page 1. Name your next page as page 2 or whatever, delete the bit you had on the first page and the bits you want on subsequent pages, and do the same for all the other pages you want to split it into. Then you can just add in a simple hyperlink or button on each page to go to the next page, or even better, have a 'back' link or button as well so people can go back to the previous page as well (you can use a snippet of javascript for that:
<p><a href="javascript:history.back(1)">Back to previous page</a></p>

...or you could have links to all the pages on each page instead:

<p>Page: <a href="page1.html"> title="Go to page 1">1</a> <a href="page2.html">
title="Go to page 2">2</a> <a href="page3.html"> title="Go to page 3">3</a> <a
href="page4.html"> title="Go to page 4">4</a></p>

etc.

I just realised that web-design is a relative thing. Some say they are good and some say they are bad at it. Your original question was how am I doing so far?

Well... I could write loads about the appearance of your site (in a constructive way of course) but... I would have aboslutely NO idea how to get a shopping cart going so fair play :)

If I did I would probably sell all those cats :)
