Number of visits increase page rank? - 2/21/2006 10:58:38
I am trying to better understand how search engines work. Does page rank improve as more people visit your site?

What determines a site's page rank (Google or otherwise) is kind of like the Caramilk secret -- no one really knows for sure except a select few elite who are kept locked in a vault at Google. Seriously, there are a lot of different factors that can affect your page rank -- positively or negatively. And the methodology used is changing all the time. Trying to figure it out from "our end" is like trying to nail jello to a greased wall. Here's what I have picked up about it in general, but I'm not an expert so take it with a grain of salt. If you have quality content, that will definitely help. If you update regularly, that will probably help. If you have lots of ways for people to find you (lots of backlinks to your site from other sites, especially from those with a higher rank than you), that will help. If you have lots of people visiting your site, that will help but I'm not sure that will override other factors that the SEs see as negative. If you can get one-way links to your site from high(er) quality sites, this is likely to raise your status with the SEs (in other words, getting them to link to you without you having to link to them in return). Reciprocal links (I link to you, you link to me) can help, but this is becoming viewed as less important with the SEs. If you link to spammy sites (lots of ads, little or no real content), it could possibly lower your page rank. (However, you're not likely to be penalized if they link to you, since you have no control over who links to you. It just isn't likely to help you very much either.) Similarly, I've heard reports that using some link exchange services can harm rather than help your ratings in the SEs. If you have nothing but advertising and affiliate links leading out of your site (and nothing of quality that's there for information purposes), that *might* lose you points in some SEs. If you have very few backlinks and/or only backlinks from poor quality sites (especially spam sites), that might bring your site's quality down in the "eyes" of the SEs. And depending on the SE, it can take many months for them to notice you and take you seriously. So sometimes, even when you have all the best ingredients, time is still necessary for it to "cook." I think that's most of the factors, although I might have left some out. Hope that helps! Starhugger

Does page rank improve as more people visit your site? No, it does not. Page rank and search engine results placing are two different things. Now PR will HELP SERPs, but it is only one point in overall optimization. Take care, Brian

You can then take this and plug it right into goole. It will reveal current standings. Take care, Brian

ORIGINAL: Reflect Actually you can... http://www.iwebtool.com/pagerank_prediction Very cool! I wasn't aware of that. Very interesting... My home page's current PR is 3, but with all the traffic I've started getting since it got that rank, it suggests that the functional PR is much higher. This tool predicted a 5, which would make more sense. However, even they don't claim that their results are "truth." But it's still a very interesting and useful tool! quote:

ORIGINAL: joebobfrank Hi, my site is fairly new... i'm trying to optimize for search engines and increase page rank. Right now im looking for people who will link to me. got any suggestions? Approach other websites who have a similar or complementary site topic to yours and ask if they would be interested in a link exchange. Link exchange isn't as valuable as it used to be, but at least it gets your link out there and search engines (and viewers) can find you through those links. It's a start anyway. Some people take the first step by putting up a link to the site they want the reciprocal link from. Then they send an email to them giving the URL of where they can find their link, and ask if they would be interested in exchanging links. If you don't get the link back from the other site, you can always take it down. Putting theirs up first shows good faith, it shows that you're serious about it, and it saves time by having half of the exchange already done (they don't have to send an email back saying "let me know when you've put up the link" and then wait for yours back, etc.). You might also search around for link directories that specialize in or are related to your site topic -- reputable ones, not those awful "link farms" with nothing but links and advertising. Also, search for sites and blogs that talk about how to increase traffic, to give you more ideas. Good luck! Starhugger

Oh-- I just took a peek at your site. I would HIGHLY recommend you get a fair bit of content up there first before you even think about approaching anyone. No one is going to want to link to a blank site, and you may lose credibility if you approach anyone before you've actually got a site going. Good luck. Starhugger

Perhaps the most reliable way to increase your pagerank is by having a lot of quality pages that link back to the homepage. Links from other sites can be deleted or changed, and sometimes those other sites go down. But if you have hundreds or even thousands of indexed pages on your site that all link back to the homepage

How I obtain links as one possibility: I look to see who my competition is. I then do a link query to see who is linking to them. I then approach those site for a link. Another method I do is hit Google and query my sites genre+add link or submit link or add site. I also do NOT use one code snippet for links back to me. I rotate through five of them. These all point to different pages in my site that I want to get the best rankings on. These are normally major content topic pages or "money pages" (Items that I sell). I think the SEs see this as being more natural but it is only my opinion. Take care, Brian

One of my customers recently told me their site comes up number one in google when they type in a specific keyword. Their sales for this particular product has gone up because of this. Thanks for all of your suggestions!!!
