I need an opinion - 2/22/2006 12:43:38
How does everyone feel about go daddy as a host. I have a client that wants to keep his domain and everything but this is my first site that i'm being paid for. So, I don't know if Go Daddy is any good and how hard it is to work w/ using FP 2003

Before the GoDaddy bashers get here, I'd like to say that I've been using them for a dedicated server for about a year now, my sites have never been down (at least for long enough for me to notice) and the few times I've had some problems they took care of them quickly and thoroughly. That being said, I've been a systems administrator working on a Windows platform for almost a decade and so running a server is old hat to me. I can't say for certain that someone without a good knowledge of running a server would have the same experience, but I'm sure that is the same running any server. I've never used their regular hosting, but it should be pretty similar using PLESK control panel.

I would never put any website you care about on GoDaddy. If you are looking for a cheap, unreliable host, with not so great support, and overloaded servers, GoDaddy is a perfect option for you. Take a look at www.webhostingtalk.com . Search for godaddy and view all the negative feedback. drogens, invisual dot us is one of your sites on the GoDaddy ded, right?

if your customer already had godaddy and is happy - stick with them..as to them "working with FP' - not an issue. every business has detractors and supporters so if they are happy, why switch??

To be sure, I read through a laundry list of the complaints of Godaddy.com on the forum mentioned above. Quite a few had legitimate complaints and so I'll go ahead and say that perhaps if you are new at hosting, godaddy might not be the best place to go. At the same time, this seems like a vocal minority. There are quite a few reasons I think this: 1) Some people who frequent the forums offer hosting. If they run their own server or use a different service than GoDaddy, they have a vested interest in giant bashing. 2) Some people hate big companies. 3) Some people don't have the expertise to run a server/hosting. While smaller companies do a lot of hand holding to grow their business, GoDaddy has the market share to not need to. 4) Some people are not polite to technical support technicians or are infuriated that someone of their expertise can't simply tell a level 1 tech that they need level 3 support. 5) Those who are unhappy complain, while those who are happy stay silent. That being said, my dedicated server runs very well. I currently host 35 domains on it some of which get a considerable amount of traffic. I have all sorts of web based applications that all run well. I suspect that any giant in an industry who's userbase is technically savvy will run into haters. Look at Microsoft. Are they perfect? No. But it is hard to imagine where we would be today, computing wise, without some giant vendor creating standard platforms for the vast majority. GoDaddy does take a hard line on spam which seems to upset some people who had their servers either infected with spyware or configured improperly to make them available to clients who were either infected or spamming. This seems to be the cause of quite a few of the complaints. Some know how and careful behavior when utilizing the server should keep you pretty well protected. Like Network Solutions and many other registrars, they take advantage of their own service to snatch up expiring and expired domains. They likely have software programs that monitor keywords and grab domains meeting certain search criteria in order to make a further profit. I don't think GoDaddy is for everyone, but it does serve a market both on the low and the high end because of price. That is unless Bobby is going to tell me he has something to note about my design site that he alluded to above.
