Need help with frontpage extensions admin - 2/25/2006 2:40:19
I am having the strangest issues on my 2003 server.
I have FP2002 extensions loaded. I have @ 40 IIS sites
Some of them have their own IP address, some of them share an IP.
All of the sites work just fine but the problem is that when I use the FP admin page to login to admin a particular site the login prompt comes back to prompt again and adds the sitename (sitename.com\username) and will never let me log in.
Now of course you will ask! Is your password correct? Well Yes it is because it works just fine for 2 of the sites but not for all of them.

Any takers?

I am no means an expert at this, but i help manage 2 web servers, and we have the same issue on our websites when we are trying to launch the FP admin interface ON THE WEB SERVER WHERE THE WEBSITES RESIDE. The other web administrator handles these types of issues, and says that it has something to do with the way the web server's host file is set to handle the domain/IP entries, and that it would be very complicated and dangerous to modify the host file to accomodate. Here's the work around he gave me. ..

Since we connect to our web servers via remote access, he suggested that I access the FP admin from my PC using IE, rather than when I am on the web server. Then, it will let you in using the admin username and password. Works like a charm. I don't know if you have the ability to do this or not, but I simply saved a shortcut to the FP Admin page for the 2 webservers on my PC, and connect that way rather than hooking up remotely and trying to access on the actual server.

Hope this helps you out.

Have you verified all the permissions on this domain? I have seen this before & re-running the FPSE admin helped once. Removing the extensions, the user name / user group also helped once but I do not recommend removing the extensions if there are a lot of FP components on there

This just happened to me as well. We have 65 sites on the server and everything else is working fine. We were having general networking issues so I asked my host to swap out the network card in an attempt to troubleshoot. This morning, each domain prompts me for a username/password which I provide. It pauses and then asks again. The server log is reporting a successful log in followed by an immediate log out. If you type an incorrect username or password, this gets reported properly as well.

The server is properly authenticating, it's just logging out the connection immediately. I've searched google. I've tried a number of things, but nothing is working.

This sounds like the work of a windows update gone wild or something.

A little added information:

If I go into the IIS Manager and then go to: Application Pools > Properties > Identity and change it from "Network Service" to "Local System" and then click apply and OK to the security warning that follows, I can then log in to my sites using Front Page.

The problem is the security message that appears in the above process:

You have chosen to run this application pool as Local System. The Local System identity has full access to your computer and running this application pool as Local System could increase the severity of any attacks resulting from unauthorized access to your Web server. Please ensure that it is absolutely necessary for this application pool to run as Local System before proceeding. Do you wish to run this application pool as Local System?

Now that is a scary warning! I'm guessing that in a perfect world, no, I don't want to do this, however I am running out of options. What this does tell me is that my issue is related to permissions somewhere and likely having to do with the "Network Service" account not having the right access levels, I just don't know what the right permissions for this service are without creating any unwanted security risks.

So I have yet to completly fix the issue I have had (at top) my work around has been to copy the url from the browser on the local IIS server that fails to another system and as long as I type the right username and password it lets me mange the web server just fine.
I have had some suggest that it may be some sort of permissions/DNS issue but I really don't have htime to trouble shoot it and the work around is just fine for me right now...
