BSI endorsed PAS on it's way...standards for web access... - 2/25/2006 11:56:39

British Standards Institution has been commissioned by the Disability Rights Commission to produce formal guidance on website accessibility for disabled people.

This guidance will aim to inform website commissioners and developers of their obligations and of good practice in this area and will take the form of a BSI endorsed Publicly Available Specification (PAS). The article quoted below is taken from the Disability Rights Commission website and provides further details about the project:

The Disability Rights Commission (DRC) is concerned about the current inaccessibility of websites to disabled people. In April 2004 we published the results of a Formal Investigation (FI) into the issues that disabled people face when using websites. The findings of the investigation led us to work with the British Standards Institution (BSI) to produce formal guidance on website accessibility.

The DRC’s investigation discovered that many disabled people find many websites difficult to use. However, this hasn’t always been their experience of the web. When Professor Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web (WWW), he expected it to provide a level playing field for disabled and non-disabled people alike: ‘The power of the Web is in its universality. Access by everyone, regardless of disability, should be an essential aspect.’

funnily ironic that the site that article is cited on is not resizable in IE (using points for text size...) and the text is heckish small as it is!

well spotted Dave! I use FF and never even thought to check it out in IE. I wonder if it's a "spot the deliberate mistake" - perhaps someone should tell them...
