changing my domain name - 2/25/2006 12:18:50
Sooner or later, I'm going to have to change the domain of the forums to outfrontwebmaster.com. My understanding is that a change like this is very likely to destroy our ranking in Google.

Is this so? And is there any way around it?

I would guess that it could build back up in a few months. No?

I would HEAVILY read up on 301 redirects. It will help "ease" the transition.

Take care,

Brian

Is there a strong business reason to not use Outfront.net?

We could all click our 'vote yes' buttons on the Google toolbar after you change the name?

What about those of us who don't have the Google toolbar? :)

I was hooked on it a while back, but gave it up over a year ago. I do keep a copy on a testing browser, but really don't want Google tracking my day to day movements between my various sites.

I suspect they may have ways of doing that regardless of if the toolbar is installed!? Especially if your using Adsense and the like.

I have never installed the Google (or any other) toolbar. The privacy implications have bothered me from the outset. I don't trust Google one iota.

Have a read of this, especially point 6 about the G toolbar:

And this makes interesting (scary) reading too:

Absolutely, but while they will know of my sites that run Adsense - there is no need to know about my sites that DON'T run Adsense. The toolbar can give those away.

I was never concerned about my privacy until I realized it could hurt my wallet.

I was thinking of a few site networks that I own. They are good - and old - and if they went down I imagine I would loose a significant amount of my monthly income.

Sorry for my failure to reply on this thread. I posted this just before I went on vacation. Then I somehow forgot about it while I was in Vegas. :)

There are 2 reasons to go away from frontapagewebmaster.com. The first is that we have lots and lots of folks who haven't used FP in years. The name has to be a negative as far as the site's appeal to new visitors who do not use FP.

The second reason is that FP will quite likely be changing it's name some time next year. The domain name will no longer fit for anyone who uses current sofware.

Mojo,

Maybe it would be best to bring the forums under the outfront.net domain. Do you think there would be advantages to that as far as search engine scores is concerned?

This is a very big decision to make and I disagree with the logic here,

quote:

The first is that we have lots and lots of folks who haven't used FP in years

But we have very many newbies who are using various editions of FP; an influx of them around the beginning of the year in fact. Most seem to be unable to use html and are heavily reliant on the FP Design View. They probably followed Google links with the keyword Frontpage in their searches.

quote:

The domain name will no longer fit for anyone who uses current sofware

But will fit the majority who don't and maybe wont for a very long time ie. when Expressions becomes more affordable and/or more learn html.

This site is a valuable resource for teaching sensible use of FP, unlike many others who teach all the proprietry rubbish which gets FP a bad name. In addition where else would members not be ridiculed for using Frontpage?

I agree in part with Caz. I first found OF back when I was using FP, got stuck and googled for 'Frontpage' and it just so happened that OF was the first that came up in the search results, had the answers I needed, and seemed friendlier than the rest.

One of the great strengths of OF is the diversity of users of different software and knowledge available here, but as Caz says, many members do still use FP, particurlarly new members and FP is probably going to be an important route to OF for a while yet. Maybe it's a little too early to be looking at moving away from the FP image quite yet. That said, there's going to come a point where Expressions will take over from FP as the dominant WYSIWYG editor (at least as far as M$ is concerned) - I'd say around the time Amazon starts dropping its prices :)

..besides..isnt it the content of the discussions (and not the site name) that is drawing all of your traffic? a rose by any other name is just as smelly
