spinningjennie -> Scan hand written signature then create gif (2/27/2006 6:14:59) I have the handwritten felt pen signature of a person that I want to save as a gif with a transparent background. Are there any tips for ensuring that the signature that I cut out of the background has smooth edges? I haven't tried anything with an actual signature yet, but have tried using the magic wand to select then remove the white background of some Microsoft clip art (as practice before I receive the scanned signature tomorrow). These practice sessions resulted in fairly jagged line art. I chose anti-aliased before making my selection. PS This will be used first on a printed letter so needs to be clear. If the white background scans to be all white, there won't be a problem, but there might be greyish parts to the background. Thanks in advance. spinningjennie

d a v e -> RE: Scan hand written signature then create gif (2/27/2006 9:30:09) if it's ONLY going on a white background then you might be able to alter the levels/brightness/contrast enough to make a slightly greyish-white white. you may have to clean up any scans with not only the magic wand (you didn't say which program you're using, or is it a *real* magic wand ;) but zoom in and carefully tidy it up with the eraser, possibly set to about 50-75% opacity/strength

d a v e -> RE: Scan hand written signature then create gif (2/27/2006 14:11:53) the resolution wouldn't make any difference for screen use, only the size in pixels would. also resizing might help to a certain extent but if you need to do it too much then you lose detail ;)

The 300 dpi and 600 dpi scans were both clean (no shadowy background), and both seemed to print the same on my printer. (This is to be for a print job first). (Sorry. I had to ask the question in advance of the problem because of time constraints for this community organisation.) As an aside: I was told in a course that you divide the printer dpi by 8 to get the appropriate scan resolution. My printer is 9600 dpi x 2400 dpi. I don't understand the difference between the 9600 and the 2400, but I think (not sure) if I divide the 2400 by 8, that the scan resolution at 300 dpi will give me max. results possible with my printer. The 600 dpi scan won't give me any better results than the 300 dpi scan but makes for a bigger file size. That appeared to be the case when I tested. Thanks again. Spinningjennie
