mar0364 -> Screen Capture Tutorials (2/27/2006 10:17:19)

I'm looking for a production that will allow me to capture several steps in a software program and turn it into a a video tutorial. We have all seen these things "how to edit a word document" and it takes you through all the steps in presumably a Flash movie. Don't have the money to by Flash and it seems like a monster to learn. Has anyone used anything that fits the bill?

Thanks!
Rich

Rich: microsoft has a free utility - a recorder.....damn- i have the link and the .exe at home. iw ould say search MS site but...that is huge!
i could do it for you in flash if you have screen shots or even a movie (it might cost a beer!)

I love beer. It's the embodiment of all things good.

there's adobe's (formerly macromedia's) Captivate
http://www.macromedia.com/software/captivate/?promoid=BINN
but it looks quite expensive!

Thanks I ended up using DPF suggestion. It works great.

Here is the link. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/thankyou.aspx?familyId=1B3C76D5-FC75-4F99-94BC-784919468E73&displayLang=en&oRef=http%3a%2f%2foffice.microsoft.com%2fen-us%2fassistance%2fHA012229101033.aspx

works in conjunction with office 2003.

How would I just do a "screen shot"? I heard it was ctrl+printscreen, but that doesn't work. Any idea would be helpful.

Thanks!
Tony

printscreen will copy the whole screen (all windows) to the clipboard

alt + printscreen will copy only the active window to the clipboard

ahhh... thats why.. its alt not ctrl thank you much!

I've used Macromedia Captivate for quite awhile, started when it was Robo Demo 5 [8D] I haven't seen any updates at all lately. There are still quite a few bugs in the software, but nobody is doing anything at all about them.

d a v e -> RE: Screen Capture Tutorials (2/28/2006 9:03:25)

macromedia and bugs?! :) have you donwloaded the latest patches/updater?

BobbyDouglas -> RE: Screen Capture Tutorials (2/28/2006 14:34:06)

I've downloaded the "new" Captivate 1.01 update that was released over a year ago. The program doesn't always open, you have to minimize everything and then click on it. When the source file is 2.5mb> it closes the captivate program (without saving changes) after you output the souce. Another run I run into a lot is trying to run two Captivate screens at the same time, it just doesn't work. There are a few other small issues that have never been fixed. The drive it is on is 100% clean.

Well I downloaded Captive. WOW so much better product and easier to use.

All my files are below that 2.5 that Bobby talks about. Working great for me. I may have to buy it.

Try these out and see if they fit what you are looking for:
Camtasia and Snag-it

As a trainer I am always doing "just-in-time" training for all sorts of topics. Snag-it is the screen capture tool I prefer (and I've tested lots!) and Camtasia is the software that will let me create " low-end simulations" with the actual steps along with screen shots. Voice can be added. We use it alot at my day job for training. I have a whole library of "just in time" tutorials on a variety of topics. I use this alot to answer all the Q&A I get on training issues. I personally have found these tools very helpful. There are more robust and powerful and more "professional" tools, but these have helped me many a time for just a few dollars.

Edit: just checked out what the "public price" is and it is higher than I expected. Gov't rate/Educational rate is quite a bit lower . Still a great solution that might work for you.

Kitka -> RE: Screen Capture Tutorials (3/6/2006 18:38:03)

I use the Screen Capture utility that is built into Paint Shop Pro. I assumed all graphics programs of similar standard would have one.

BobbyDouglas -> RE: Screen Capture Tutorials (3/6/2006 19:08:08)

Camtasia is a cheaper version of Captivate. After trying both (over 6 months ago, so maybe Camtasia improved- I know Captivate hasn't), I ended up going with Captivate.

I think the demo version of Captivate will last for 30 days, I am not sure if the features are unrestrictive, or even if you can profit from a file created during the demo period.

Make sure you try out both programs, Captivate is another $200 over Camtasia.

mar0364 -> RE: Screen Capture Tutorials (3/6/2006 21:41:41)

Thanks everyone I will try Camtasia.

zoom -> RE: Screen Capture Tutorials (3/15/2006 7:42:37)

womble -> RE: Screen Capture Tutorials (3/15/2006 10:37:54)

On screen capturing things for on the web, there's also the ScreenGrab! FF extension.

<edit>You can find it here. With a right click in FF it'll let you get an image of the whole document, viewport or window.</edit>

caz -> RE: Screen Capture Tutorials (3/15/2006 11:11:28)

Thanks Womble that's great - it saves all that cropping in PSP.
