house? - 2/27/2006 23:24:45
This might be a stupid question, but why do design studios sometimes use house in there name? You know like Brown House Design, or blue car design house? I'm I making this more then it is? Is it them just calling there studio, "house". Or where they work? :)

A lot of companies use the word "house" in their description. It's just a poncy way of making them seem more than they are. A "design house" sounds much grander than a "design studio". Other companies use "house" as a sort of traditional way of describing themselves. In the UK the big mail-order catalogue companies are referred to as "mail order houses", and we have a department store group called "House of Fraser".

Generally businessess, particularly large businesses think of themselves as "houses" some of the time, for instance if you have your own advertising department instead of using an outside agency you normally describe it as an in-house facility. You might ask a potential new client "do you currently use a web design company or is your web site originated in-house?"

Any one can call themselves a "house" if they wish to, but some of the "designers" who put up sites for critique would be better described as "design bungalows" than "design houses" IMHO. :~)

Drat it - I thought this thread was about the "award winning" US Medic Drama, starring the inimitable Hugh Laurie and now showing on any TV screen near the Brits. I think Dr House sounds much, much better than Dr Bungalow.:)
