What did you do to make yourself a company? Let's say I work by myself but want to call my company "something web design". (Not literally) Would I have to go some where and file papers and get a tax id? Or can I just call myself whatever? Also if I just call my company whatever how do I cash checks that are made out to "something wed design" and not to me? How do you guys do it? Sorry just entering into the whole Business thing. In Australia you can register a business name through the Department of Fair Trading, you can also search other registered business names to see if your preferred name is already taken or not. Note: In Australia you're not allowed to name your business anything that even sounds like anyone else, especially if it's in the same line of business. (In my case Nix by itself was already taken in the Information Technology section by someone, I rreally wanted to purchase Nix.net.au). Registering a business name in Australia costs about $170 for 3 years. With this registration you're given a business number (ABN xx xxx xxx xxx) which you have to quote on all invoices, letterheads etc and the Tax Dept and Bank need to know this number also.
