"An error occurred accessing your..." - 2/28/2006 16:46:52
Well, I'm at my witt's end... I've been usint FrontPage and Windows Servers for a good 5 years now. I have FP2003 and author against a very well maintained Windows Server 2003 (Web Edition) with Sharepoint and .NET framework.

I own the server myself, and have been providing hosting and design services to a number of clients in many genre's and industries.

Over the past few years this message has popped up on occassion:
"An error occurred accessing your Windows SharePoint Services site files. Authors - if authoring against a Web Server, please contact the Webmaster for this server's Web site. WebMasters - please see the server's application event log for more details."

HOWEVER,
With virtually no warning what-so-ever... this error has become a rather bothersome pain in the neck. It comes up litterally every time I attempt to edit something. It happens most often when accessing a folder for the first time in a session, or when creating a new folder or file. Saving a new file sometimes causes the error.. and occasionally it comes up opening a web. There have been instances in the past where it would even inhibit my ability to create a subweb.

I have searched the Microsoft Knowledgebase extensively and found NOTHING to help me.

The only solution I've managed to find thus far - was to re-install the server. I'm sure I don't have to tell you that re-installing a server should NOT be the only solution to this mysterious problem. There MUST be a simpler way to fix this.

I have noticed a couple of other threads in this forum which address the existance of the problem, but no solutions as yet.

Please... can someone point me down a path of resolution?

Guess what folks!?

2 minutes after posting that desperate plea for help - I found a potential solution.

There is a workaround from Microsoft that hasn't been published yet because it is not all documented. Here is what you do. Too simple to believe it!

Open your Internet Explorer. Select Tools > Internet Options > Advanced, and unselect all "HTTP 1.1 settings".

Then under the tab "General" of the Internet Options, clear all tempory internet files. Delete the Cookies. Delete Files, but make sure to select "Delete all offline content". Clear History.

That should do it.

Hi - I am having the same problems. I host most of my sites at ehosting.ca (mecca.ca) and they say it is my software. I don't experience this problem elsewhere. I tried your fix but - no go. Any other ideas.

If they claim that it's your software, but you only get the errors on their server - then I'm afraid I'm going to have to dis-agree with them.

Find out if they are running a TRUE WindowsSERVER2003 system. Plus, make sure that you're using the latest (2003) version of FrontPage. Unfortunately there are a LOT of IT "professionals" who "THINK" they know all about FrontPage and windows servers, but really just haven't kept abreast of all the enhancements and changes over the past 8 or 10 years.

I ran into a similar situation with a host a couple years ago. The "Pro" informed me that it was my own problems and settings and that no one else has had the problem with their server.
I finally convinced him to tell me what ACTUAL software he/they were running for a server or server extensions, and it turned out that they didn't even have microsoft based servers, but yet they claimed 100% compatibility.

When I asked him how often he updated the server extensions, he said (and I quote)...
"What server extensions?"

Well I just about pee'd myself laughing at him... cancelled my account and moved the website to my own server. The only reason the site was on a hosted server was because that's where my client wanted it.

The long and short of it, is this... if it works on every other server you deal with, then in fact it's not YOUR error. In the mean time - head to microsoft.com and make sure you have the newest updates, extensions, and any supporting updates that you can find. If things still don't work - then try creating the same error on a different server. If you have to - copy the entire site to a different server and duplicate the exact conditions which cause the error. This is a good way to double check a variety of issues, plus it will tell you FOR SURE, which end the error is coming from.

I spoke with the host server techie and he says they use the 2002 version because it has fewer bugs. They suggested I get FO 2002 but I hate going in reverse and don't want to start buying "retro" software. If I email you the user and pass, perhaps you could try opening the site with your version of FrontPage. That is to say, if you don't mind...

Well, I suppose I could give that a shot for you, but it's not going to solve anything.

Here's the way I see it...

THEY claim that they use 2002 because it has fewer bugs.

- Mine works (2003)
- Theirs Doesn't (2002)

Looks like they have at least one bug that I don't have.

Drop me a private message with login info - let me know what you want me to do that normally causes errors, and I'll give it a shot. :o)

Just out of curiosity - what do they charge for hosting?
