router question - is this possible? - 2/28/2006 18:02:34
hey gys got a networkign question... Want to know if this is possible... Right now I have a hub, and I am paying like an extra $5.00 a month for an extra connection. SO I have 2 internext connections coming in to the hub. But to get another connection is like 15-20$ and I dont need the 3rd. I like having 2 connections for good speeds... So I want to get a router. Now on the router, I want 3 connections... I want the 2 IP's the compay is giving to me. I want 1 of those IP's to go to one computer. I then want the other IP to be split into 2 more IP's (for 2 other computers)... So basically with the router I want to have 1 full connection to one computer... the other full connection split into 2 to go to 2 computers.... So cable comes in from modem, to router, splits from router to 3 PC's.. 1 getting a full connection.. the other 2 splitting... Any ideas?

Yup, read up on dhcp in your router/switch manual. It is easily done but differs on how to setup from brand to brand. Take care, Brian

You may need to spend more on that router tho. From the way I see it, your router will need to support 2 static IP WAN addresses. Your basic 'shrink wrapped' routers rarely ever support that.

What you want to do is hook one internet connection up to the router. Connect the two computers you want to split internet access to into it. The other internet connection connect directly to the computer that you want to have it's own connection. Optional: If you need all three computers to be able to communicate between themselves, buy a second network card and install it into the computer that has it's own internet connection then hook that and the router into the hub.
