Hyperlink Problems HELP PLEASE - 3/2/2006 11:52:44
Is there a setting in FP 2003 that changes the paths for links to local?

Suddenly when I try to enter new links with the browse option they all come up my local computer file paths and upload that way so they don't work. The links and photos on the home page all changed to my desktop path without my changing them. I changed them manually but cannot enter new links as easily as before.

I'm publishing after editing not editing live.

This is the site www.chickadeecharms.com :)

Usually when you save, the links change. However if they are not - you might be be working in a Frontpage web

Corey, I just entered a little test at the bottom of the page and saved and uploaded and it doesn't link. I'm not sure what you mean in a frontpage web. Does that mean editing live? When I hit publish I had to enter the user and pw so that wouldn't be the case? Could the ISP have made some change that might cause this? Help is appreciated.

If you go to My Computer and drill down to where your files are located - does it have a globe on it?

Chances are it will since you said you can publish it. Your ISP is only providing you access to the internet - it should not be accessing your computer.

And finally what version of FP?

I have FP 2003. I do not see a globe but I am able to publish. I have 8 sites and only 4 have globes but I publish all with FP 2003. How do I get the globe to appear?

You need to convert them to frontpage webs. If you cannot convert - create a new web and copy those files into the new Frontpage web

I looked at help and followed instructions. I attempted to open the folder with the sites and then I was going to right click on the folders without globes and convert to web but the option convert to folder was there instead so they must be webs already? The folder I have my web sites in has the globe so does that mean they are okay...some of the web sites within that folder have their own globes and some do not. :)

Not necessarily. For example the main folder where over 100 sites that I have is called C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\My Webs and it has a globe on it. In there are over 100 folder and each on of them has a globe on it to signify that it is a Frontpage web. You might even say a sub-web or sub-site even.

When I look at them in my documents some have globes and some do not, the main folder does. When I open the main folder with front page and look at the individual folders they have little globes on all of them. I appreciate your taking the time to help me.

You have to create front page webs. Go to file - New Web. Create a New web and copy the files / folders into that one and now you should have a Frontpage web on your local computer

I created a new site and copied the files and tried entering the link again and it is still referencing my desktop. The globe is there now. I have one file "shipping" with a circle and a red X. I've never seen that.

I didn't just upgrade though. I've been using frontpage 2003 for a couple years. Are there benefits to updating live instead of updating, saving and uploading? If I add fabrics though it takes a lot of time.

I realize what I did with the sites. I created one and then created the others inside that folder. I have successfully converted all the sites. I am checking each one and the chickadee site is the only one that links to the desktop..no change.

I was having problems losing the index pages on the converted sites but it was because a second index file was created when I converted.....at least I'm learning.

It does not matter - I just wanted to make sure you knew what I was talking about since I might have gone more into detail in that thread :)

I prefer to publish locally because that way I have a back up copy in case something happens on the hard drive.

If you did do this - you might also be able to open the "main" web right click on the folder that should be your web site and say convert to web

I created new sites for each and pasted them each into the new site and then renamed them. I had some minor problems, like a counter on one site not working and ending up using an external counter and on some the index pages had to be adjusted. Everything seems fine and all have globes within one folder now so maybe I have advanced that much.

I have not solved the link problem on the index page for the chickadee site, however. I guess I just have to live with the inconvenience. I tried recreating the index page and replacing it in the navigation structure but that didn't change the way it identifies the links. The links on all other pages are relative when I browse after hitting control K so at least it's only one page that I have to remove the path for my local computer. I sure appreciate all the advice and I did learn along the way. If you think of anything else, or if anyone else does, I would appreciate hearing advice.

I'm tenacious enough that I don't want to do anything else until I figure things out so my husband had to fix his own dinner!! THANK YOU AGAIN.:)

When you browse - they might be absolute but upon saving - that does not take them to relative

That is correct, they stay absolute when I save and upload and then the pictures or links are not accessible. It is only on that one index page all other pages and all other site index pages are fine. :)

Whenn you say other site index page - do you have other folders in there that have an index page? Since technically only one web site can have an index page

Have you attempted to possibly copy / redo the offending page to see if that fixes these issues?

No, I have only one index page in each site but I checked my other sites' index pages and they are not doing this thing... I have tried making a new page with a different name...copying the contents of the index page, deleting original index and renaming the new file and putting it in the navigation structure but I get the same results. My next attempt will be to go to a back up copy and see if I can copy that page and substitute it in the site with updates.

It sounds like that page just might be corrupted. Did a Tools - Recalculate hyperlinks work? Do you shut down / reboot often?

Corey, The recalculate didn't seem to do anything. I do reboot if things seem to be acting strangely. If the file is corrupt, and that sounds like the most logical explanation, would it be just that page? I notice that the fabric pages are slow to load when I'm editing but some have 100 fabrics so that's normal, right? Maybe I should redo the site and give it a new look anyway....V

Since you are only having problems with that page - I would think it is corrupt
