New FrontPage install/Unix admin - 3/3/2006 11:23:13
Good morning, I have administered Mac, Unix, Linux, Solaris servers with Apache, Zeus, Medusa, thttp, WebStar, QuidProQuo, and lighthttpd. I'm not stupid, but I can't seem to get Server 2003 to use FrontPage extensions. I have a new clean Server 2003 install with .NET installed. One site is up and running with asp/aspx programming and SQLServer just fine. I am attempting to move several old sites from a FrontPage server over to the new server. I create a new website in IIS manager, assign an IP and hostnames, check it from a remote machine and boy howdy it's there. I add a user DSN and the DB is even working. (I'm thinking I can survive this experience at this point). Now I open IIS Manager, select the website, and choose ALLTasks -> Configure Server Extensions 2002 I get an MSIE window and a login prompt, I login and check the info. The hostname is correct, administrator is correct (the server admin), click submit. I get a new MSIE page showing the websites and a admin link to the site I just added FPSE to. I click it, get another new MSIE page, I see a link to login to the site adminstration. I cannot, error 401, not authorised. I can't login from a rightclick on the site, from my adminstrative tools, from anywhere. I cannot administer the site. I've used Google, tried three different instructions, I even tried the Windows help. Always the same result. Four days now. What on earth am I doing wrong? Does anyone have step by step instructions for *everything* that must be done to enable Frontpage extensions and login via web folders as an author? Thank you, DAve

Ahh, more google action, remove FPSE, remove the website and folder. Create a new folder, create new website, reinstall FPSE, turn on basic authentication. Now I can admin the FrontPage site. But now I can't upload any files. I check and make sure I have perms for the user I added in the admin section, the user has advanced atuthor role, the role allows files to be added. Still can't upload the site via webfolders. Seems I can upload the site, or I can admin the site, but I can't have both. I've now started from scratch 10 times today, followed three sets of instructions. No joy. Time to call it a week.
