server extensions problem. - 3/6/2006 14:34:53
Hi and tyia for any replies. I have scoured the web, tried suggestions from this site, and have POURED through 100's of pages of ref. manuals to no avail.

Running XP Pro SP2 - IIS 5.1, FrontPage 2K2 SP1, Server Ext. 2K2 SP1 (NO Server Ext 2K at all).
.Net framework 1.0 SP3.

Site created with all of the above, except was originally on a Win2K Pro install - published to CD moved to a Server 2K SP4 box, moved to current above locale, also changed from Inetpub\wwwroot, to a pair of raptor drives (raid 0) added a couple weeks ago - so now the "home" directory is J:\comm-net.

I'll start by saying IIS and XP Pro don't seem to like eachother very well, it was a nightmare to get it to cooperate and get a "Server Based Web" in a location other than Inetpub\wwwroot - and I don't even want to talk about VB.NET and it's issues with it's own underlying framework versions - *Note, if you are using VB.Net 7.X (aka 2K2) - DO NOT UPGRADE the .Net framework to 2.0, I probably wouldn't even go to 1.1.

That being said - my issue: I have 2 problems actually (perhaps one relates to the other, don't know) -

1. I have the "standard" "feedback" form, which saves to a file and sends email, It won't send email - except to itself (moving from que directory to drop directory), it appears to send, leaves the que directory but never reaches the destination, I ultimately get a msg. in the event log saying it couldn't connect. I have verified SMTP appears functional, as I can set Outlook express to use my SMTP server, and it successfully sends email to the email address I'm trying to get the html page to send to.

2. If I reboot, OR just restart IIS - the "feedback" page stops working, and I can't open the site w/front page - until I launch the server extensions 2k2 admin page 1 time. This happens EVERY time, nor can I chose recalculate server extensions web, or check server health from the IIS snapin - without going "right click site name" server extions 2k2 tab - administration. Then everything is back to "normal" - see #1 above.

Correction steps already taken:

Uninstall/reinstall everything EXCEPT IIS (I have gone into control panel - add/remove - and unchecked - rechecked the boxes - which gave me some hdd activity, whether it actually did anything I don't know.

Verified SMTP email sending by using OE - verify permissions on vti_bin (or whatever it's called, not in front of it right now).

One other strange anamoly after I get it back to where FP 2k2 will open the site, it ALWAYS says the hyperlink in feedback.html is broken, I open the page, save it, go back to the reports page, now it's happy?

sorry for the long post trying to be as detailed as possible.

Going to the feedback page "when it's broken" gives that lovely Webmaster: Check server setup, black and white error page - which is how I found this site, I googled that error msg., about a billion times in the last week.

Your SMTP server - do you need to white list your www server?

well it shouldn't, it's only been up a few days under that domain name, and IP address, and I have relay only enabled for itself - which is a private NAT address. BTW, I'm not running in a "domain" environmet - hosting this on a single PC set as a "workgroup", shouldn't matter. And it actually has worked twice, although why it worked those 2 times is a complete mystery to me.

I may have "stumbled" onto some of the problem - the site was "working" yesterday am, at Lunch time it suddenly stopped?

My wife tells me later that a popup came up that looked like my computer was being "hacked" so she told it "deny".

It was Symantec A/V 2K5 - specifically Internet worm protection, I also have Zone alarm working - so as they say.

NAT + ZA + Symantec Internet Worm protection (bundled with A/V, not the separate "firewall") = maybe too much security, and could be the source of my problems.

I will post back with whatever I may find.

Thank You! For your reply.

P.S. The URL is www.comm-net.net

Just thought I'd mention 2 things...

1. If you're having problems with 2.0 then look at Application Pooling, split the 2.0 apps into their own pool.
See technet for iis5

2. Giving out all the details about your setup and the domain is one big invite to get cracked, especially running an older and less secure OS without all the upgrades (like 1.1)

yb2 - Thanks for your reply.

1. The application pool stuff is above my head, I don't know what you're talking about.

2. I went ahead and upgraded to 1.1 Framework - since downgrading back to 1.0 sp3 did not fix the issue.

As far as someone "cracking" my box, I seriously doubt that anyone with the actual skills to do so, would WASTE his time - getting through 2 NAT devices, and 2 software "firewalls", especially considering there's nothing on this box to be gained - although, I do agree, that giving out such details may make it easier, however, w/out such details, I probably couldn't get an answer to the problem.

Which btw I still haven't solved.

Goofiest thing - OE sends email all day long to the same address that I'm trying to get this page to send to - using this box as the smtp server, the mail gets recieved and forwarded to the proper place, BUT submitted through the page, I'll get an system smtp event saying failed connection attempt.

Also, if I restart IIS - I can't get FP2k2 to open the site it says Server error: Error 5 opening registry key "SOFTWARE\Classes\.acm".

Until I open the Sharepoint admin page one time, then FP will open the site.

Am about to trash the whole dang thing and go Linux/Apache2/php.

Can't seem to find an answer.
