Its my favorite pub, I can walk to it. The owner came to me and said he was ready for a revamped website (first site was a fp nightmare, fp themes and everything). Usually, places like this don't want to spend money to put something really good together. Ya, know, just put the hours, menu, and specials up, the usual.

It might be a lilttle 56k un-freindly, (most of my sites are 56 freindly) but for some reason, i dont think its an issue with this particular site.

I did all the photos, art work and design. No one else to blame...www.thebrewkettle.com

What do you professionals think?

Loaded pretty quick (on broadband). Good pics and it looks professional, but the whole site is a little 'busy', particularly the home page, and it's difficult to know where to look first, and it's not always clear what's clickable and what's not. For example on the right of the home page 'Sign up'...sign up to what? It's not clear until you click on it. Similarly with 'ABV/IBU', it's only if you hover over it that it's clear it takes you somewhere else.

You've got quite a few errors and warnings from the W3C validator, inlcuding no doctype, and <alt> attributes missing from some images, though a big plus accessibility wise because the site's still navigable with images switched off with the text links which you don't often find with image heavy sites. Overall looks good. [:)]

I am on adsl, and the site took forever to load. Especially the java applet - that sat there for ages, trying and trying to load.

I agree with womble that it is too "busy" and if I were "just browsing", I would have bailed out long before it finished loading. I think you could put the java on an inner page for the "stayers". Where it is will just be a turn off for most people.

I guess I am a believer in simplicity for index pages - they should have something to grab attention and spawn a desire to investigate deeper into the site. But make it "busy" and people don't know what to focus on... they will go elsewhere.

i quite liked the busy feel - if it reflects the nature of the pub, but i like ale/beer even more so i stuck around anyway! i think a little pruning and tidying and it would be there for me

i agree with dave - the busy nature depicts a bar! hey, that isnt far from me (not walking distance thou). understand that not all users have java virtual machine active ( I dont) so they get blank white space

Thanks for all your comments. I had to build the website using the bars colors, which was green and yellow...not an easy task for me. But i think overall, the colors of the website blend well together. Its the most colorful website I think I have put together.

I think the panorama is holding up the page load in some instances and I thought about just making a special page for that. But what do you do when someone has thier java virtual machine off? I mean, what is the purpose of turning off your features when browsing the web?

I will make sure I have an alt tag for every image, I have not went through and fine tuned it yet. I will take a look at the errors womble was talking about, as soon as I figure out what womble was talking about.

If your are close and like good beer DPF, I recomend hitting this pub. Very nice, non smoking bar.

[:D] Funny, that's what most people say!

The W3C validator is your friend, and tries to explain the errors and warnings it generates (though it has to be said it isn't always very clear in its explanations). Your first step's to get a doctype - A List Apart has a good article on doctypes and choosing the right one.

windows xp default is java virtual machine on off. it is advantageous to microsoft whose .net and c# competes with java. i dont turn it on because i find most java applets annoying and slow loading

At first I thought it was a bit too busy too; but the longer I looked at it the more I liked it.

Yes, the flash took a long time to load (even on BB) but I love being able to SEE the inside of the pub.

Yours is very attractive. Good graphics, good color scheme, considering the parameters that you had to work with.

The first page is borderline too much/too busy for some people, but I didn't have a problem with it.

I'd go to the place based on seeing the way that you portrayed it.

I finally billed him, the owner told me I was now on the official emplyee discount plan. Might be a sweet deal considering how often I spend money there.[:D]

Thats funny guys, I dont think I would want to ruin my nice deal right off the bat, but you might not be able to really drink more than 3 beers without getting really wobbly. So around 10 bucks for 3 beers around 7 IBU, you will be feeling fine.[8D]
