SEO basics - 3/10/2006 12:13:06
I'm definitely a novice when it comes to SEO.

I just recently redesigned my site to move it from yahoo sitebuilder to frontpage (with over 500 pages on my site...don't even ask how long that took!)

At any rate, I did it so I could have more control, remove some of the yahoo formatting that screws up SEO, and try and do a better job at it in general.

Does anyone have any "fundamental" tips that I should be doing first in order to better optimize my site.

I'm starting from scratch here....so I'm talking about things like different meta tags on every page.

If I could have a list of "you have to do these 10 things right/first before you even get started at Seo" I'd appreciate it.

site is www.preownedweddingdresses.com

Many thanks.

You can start by checking out the tutorials here on OF - there's one on search engines you can get to via the tutorials at the top of the page.

If I am not wrong , you are dealing with preowned wedding clothes.
Get some content on your website
Launch an affiliate program . That will help you
Research on the keywords you will want to target .
Recognise your target customer base ( according to taste and location )
then go in for some interesting offers on your website and then create a buzz about your website .
Well, that should kickstart things :)

True, but that's business development - not SEO. Aff link have been known to harm sites in the SERPs.

First I should mention backlinks. It's one of the most difficult aspects for webmasters, but IMO it's the most important. It's often argued as to which is more important, but the fact is a site with poor content can rank with enough good backlinks while a great content site will go nowhere without link love.

Anyhoo, here are some on page basics not listed in any particular order:

URL - a good domain helps, especially in MSN right now, also pay attention to file names and parameters
title tag - watch that is matches on page content
META description - go ahead a use it. It may help. Don't overdo it.
META keywords - make sure they relate to the page/title
H1, H2, H3 - use them where possible, but make sure they relate to the rest of the page
Bold, italic, strong, etc.. - sprinkle them where it makes sense on keywords or synonyms.
ALT Text - nice to have, don't go crazey with it though
Link Text - have well formed links that read well and aren't too spammy

Before I forget - Don't react to anything from Matt Cutts/Google Guy or any search rep. IMO, there is a LOT of disinformation out there... and it works. The average webmaster freaks out when search reps descend from the Mt. and speak with us mortals.

i got a call today from a guy who was told by an "expert" that if he altered hissite from one column to 2 columns it would disappear from the search engines but if his code passes w3c validation, it would guarantee page 1 results (without any mention of which search term)...sigh

Thanks cooper. I agree with that post except for this - "Minimized outbound links". I haven't seen evidence to support that at all. Don't link to bad neighborhoods is one thing, but linking to quality sites seems to have a positive effect. I can hardly run a search lately without wikipedia popping up - and they link everywhere.

On Coopers link I have to say that NOT using meta descriptions on ALL pages and keeping them relevant is asinine. Google reverts to them in come cases (Just one example). The more targeted they are for EACH page the more it will help you. It was not in the first post but down in the thread.

Take care,

Brian
