I need everything done, right now, for free - 3/14/2006 17:31:59
and it damn well better be right, because my future is riding on it... On the surface of it, that may seem like a lot to ask. However, if you asked me what I need, as an aspiring website owner, and I gave you an honest answer, that would be it. This forum is as close to the ideal described above as I have found. What the advice I've gotten for free here would cost if I had to pay for it, and what it is worth to me, are two very different things, one of which is much larger than the other. Bottom line: I'd pay for it in a heartbeat, if I could. But I can't. What I'm hoping to find is someone else in the same situation --> you've put a great deal of time and effort into launching, or preparing to launch, a web-based business, but have squat left to actually build that business with, hence need to do everything you can do by yourself, by yourself, despite not having significant expertise in, or experience with, designing, creating and/or managing a website. What I'd like to do is 'trade notes': "I'll show you mine if you show me yours." Please note: I'm not looking for trade secrets, or hard numbers, or anything that you might consider to be significant, for a competitor. What I'm mainly looking for is personal time managment tips and techniques applicable to someone in this line of work, i.e. how much time do you spend on design, how much do you allocate to coding, how much to marketing, how much to SEO, etc. Percentage of total numbers are much more useful than actual numbers, for this purpose. My basic objective is to allocate my own time more effectively, by learning from other people. In return, I'm offering the same. The forum itself is fantastic for this purpose, but direct e-mail through YouSendIt is far more flexible. What I'd like to know is how many users of this forum are in the same basic position as I am, and, in a similar vein, how many would be interested in 'trading notes', as described above?

There are no simple answers. Every site and every business is different and how much time one person spends on coding and SEO will always be different. Different people, different markets, different needs. It isn't an overnight thing. It comes from experience, and that's what we're all here for.

Thanks for your reply. I'm not so quite out of touch with reality that I believe simple answers to every question, or even any question, are all I need. What I'm hoping for is more along the lines of "I spent x hours obtaining, loading and learning to use Brand X software to manage my expenses with, and in hindsight, it was a waste of x hours," or "I spent y hours learning z, and it was the most productive use of my time so far." For example, I spent about an hour going through the Outfront tutorials on SEO, and learned enough to conclude with reasonable certainty that I only need to do some real basics, right now. Between those tutorials and a few hours persuing this forum, and a site I was referred to through this forum, I learned enough to do what I need to do, right now, as well as enough to be reasonably confident that the time I've allocated to both learning SEO, and applying what I've learned about SEO right now, is appropriate for my purposes. Perhaps this kind of thing is more appropriate for the "Tips and Techniques" section, however... Thanks, Womble.

Not only is every business different, but each person's goals are different, so it's very hard to get specific. But this I learned early on and I think it might well apply to most businesses: You'll need to identify key activities that get the results that you want. Some of those you'll know right off the bat - and some are 'basic' that you'll have to do regardless such as promptly responding to each email (that isn't spam of course) and phone call. In the beginning, I kept a general 'diary' (just by marking in my calendar) of what I did each day. Look over it at the end of the week, the end of the month and the end of the quarter - what worked and what didn't. Having identified the most important things you need to do, carve out time each day to do some of each. If it can't be done that way, then set aside a day of each week for each one. It sounds crazy, but think of those housewives that do laundry on Thursday, grocery shopping on Tuesday, etc. And continue to review and revise - again, at the end of each week, each month, each quarter and each year. Some results you'll see in weeks, others in months and even some in years. After reviewing it each time, you'll start to see a pattern - sometimes it's economic or seasonal and sometimes it's in response to your activities. I hope this helps at least a little.
