The Lycos Web Server Hosting service says it supports FrontPage 2000 and FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions.

I am using FrontPage 2003, but only 2002 extensions and I could do with the form handling in particular working. Any suggestions?

I generally work behind a firewall but I have tried puting the computer in a DMZ and I still cannot publish to the web server directly.

Whatever I do it will only work via FTP using the FTP option in FrontPage 2003 (or via another FTP client naturally).

Publishing via FrontPage results in:

Server error:
Possible causes:
1. The web server may not have FrontPage Server Extensions installed.
2. The web server may be temporarily out of service.
3. If you are connecting through a proxy server, the proxy settings may be incorrect.

If this server does not support the FrontPage Server Extensions, FrontPage may still be able to publish to the server
via FTP or WebDAV. Please select one of these options and try again.

Publishing via FTP results in the following warnings:

Warnings that:

_derived/norbots.htm will not work

Search Form or FrontPage form handler on various pages will not work

link bars or nav bars on various pages will not work

And finally at the end of the publishing process FrontPage complains that:

"500 A not understood"

As far as I can judge the link bars and nav bars DO WORK, but the forms do not. They result in the following page
being displayed:

FPSE 2002 are the latest and are compatible with FP 2003.

However if you FTP your website and not use the publish command, some of the FP components will not work and FPSE will become corrupted.

So basically - the fact that I cannot publish to the hosted web server directly from FrontPage means no FrontPage form handling for me then!

There is no way (for example) to publish to a local folder and then ftp the results to the web server in such a way that the extensions will still work?

Your host has to reinstall the extensions and then you must publish - not ftp -your site over again to get them working.

FPSE needs to be installed & FP needs to publish (not FTP). Have your hosting company check the extensions and show them the error message

I guess that about says it all. FP Publish - not FTP. Which is fine except that I have not been able to make the FP Publish work, not even by putting my machine in a DMZ.

I am in touch with the host provider (Lycos) but I am betting it will not get me anywhere.

I suspect the end result will be me running on their own form handling features (not good) for a year - and then changing provider once the contract finishes.

Curiously enough - if I ignore the instructions from Lycos and publish to the domain name it kind of works. I get a number of challenges for authentication, some work, some don't and at the end of that the publishing process carries on - and lo and belhold the site works.

Well, aside from one page - which may be a further more detailed problem or a bug in the Microsoft template (the one for customer support). For some reason the Reply to a Posting in the discussion forum fails.

Anyway, enough progress to move forwards.....

A footnote on the page that did not work... It turned out to be Norton Anti-Virus that was the problem. HTTP IIS SHTML Request intrusion detection prevents the "Reply To" working.
