Guest Book - 3/17/2006 13:22:37
Hello everybody hopefully somebody can help me !!
I have a guest book on my web site and wish to delete some of the entries there. I have opened up (as far as I know) all the files in Front Page - form results, norbots, vti, binn, etc etc. I have looked everywhere I think !! But I still cannot find where they are kept, The guest book signings appear OK I just can't seem to find where to delete the ones that I do not want.
Many thanks
Paul.

Hello,

Yes, your guestbook submittals are sent to guestlog_results or something like that. When you open that page on your computer however, it will be blank. The only way for you to delete unwanted entries, is to open the page on the server where it is hosted and live-edit.

There's a bit of a how-to here:

http://www.frontpagewebmaster.com/m-252029/key-live%252Cedit/tm.htm#252039

Good Luck!

Yes, as maura pointed out you will need to open the site live to edit and as Corey mentioned, the file is guestlog.htm, unless you changed the defaults.

Thanks very much for your help. I clicked on the link, however still have a small problem. So sorry for sounding so daft but how do I open my Frontpage live in order to delete these guest book entries. If it is a matter of deleting them off the web site (which I'm sure its not) could not anybody delete them.
Many thanks again.
Paul

Thanks for the reply. I have opened frontpage and clicked on file which then gives me two options, "publish web and "recent webs" I then click on recent webs select my web site and then publish it to the site concerned after making any alterations etc.
Does this then mean that FP is live. If so I have then clicked on guestlog.htm and all that is there a message saying "Form Results Inserted Here," then a blank page.
Many thanks again,
Paul.

Lok at the top - it should say http://www.example.com - that means it is live.

Sorry I'm totally lost now I can't see where it says www.example anywhere. So I'm clearly doing something stupid.
Thanks again,
Paul.

If you are unfamiliar with opening live, a simple way is:

Open FontPage >> File >> Open and then type the full address into the textbox normally reserved for page name.

It takes a short time to open.

Then open guestlog, edit and save.

You could also send the Guestlog entries to email so you know when to go in to delete.

Thank-you
If I open Frontpage then file a drop down menu appears with open web at the top. If I then click on that a new window opens called Open Web. In the drop down box at the top it says My web 6. Then underneath are 3 folders named derived, private, and my webs with nothing in them. I can find nothing about FP going live.
Many thanks for your patience everybody.
Paul

Go to File - Open Web. Now in that box that opens up you can type something in there - type in http://www.example.com

:-( The only place that I can type something in the window that pops up after clicking on open web or open is in the folder name box at the bottom of the window. Then I click on open and it says that what I typed in ie eample etc does not exist.
Thanks again
Paul.

Think I may have moved on a little!!!!! I have now managed to type in the file name box http://www.example.com and that gave me a message about reaching this site and some letters and numbers.
I then tried again typing the name of my web site and it sent me to it. I then clicked on guestlog in on my files to the left in FP and also tried going to the guestbook actually on the site, but only got a blank page. Still fingers crossed for that gigantic leap forward by my standards.
Many thanks,
Paul.

Yes - www.example.com i to signify your web site, it is the domain you are supposed to use in forums, etc.

Do you have your guestbook in a specific folder or the root? Did you look at the source code?

Hello Again!

There is a way for you to live-edit that may be a bit easier for you. Using Internet Explorer, go to the internet and view your guestbook entries page. (The one you want to delete the entries from)

From the Internet Explorer toolbar at the top of your browser window, click on the EDIT button. (If you do not see this button, right click on the toolbar and hit CUSTOMIZE. From there, add the button to your toolbar. Close the Customize Toolbar window, and the button should be there on your toolbar now.) Once the page is fully loaded, the button will become active. After you hit the button, click Edit with Frontpage. This will start your Frontpage program and the page will be automatically loaded into the program.

You will be asked to log-in. Use the same log-in that you use to publish your Frontpage files. Once you are logged in, you can work on that page. Delete entries, correct spelling, etc. Be sure not to mess with the Form Results Inserted Here component. When you have finished with your editing, simply hit the SAVE button and it will save your newly editted page to the server. Don't close the Frontpage program until it is done saving the page. This can be slow sometimes.

Go back to viewing your guestbook entries on the internet. Refresh the page and you should see your newly editted page.

Hope I didn't make it any harder or confusing for you! I had three guestbooks that were getting spammed so badly, I was live-editting all the time. I got REALLY good at it. I finally gave up and have since moved on to required log-ins to sign and even read the guestbooks. That works for me now.

Maura

RE: Guest Book - 3/21/2006 18:26:02
Hi thanks for that I think I may have made a little progress not sure though!!
I opened internet explorer and went to the guestbook on my site. I eventually found edit with FP on the file button which opened it up ok but did not ask me to sign in with my password etc.
When I then went to try and edit, and delete some of the entries. After I clicked on one of them the whole lot went black I pressed the delete button and lost the lot (nearly had a heart attack) Did manage to get it back after clicking on edit and undo.
So I'm afraid I'm back to the begining.
Many thanks everybody. I'll throw a party if I crack this.
Paul.

Sounds like you're really close to succeeding! Maybe you highlighted a little too much before you hit that delete button. Try highlighting one sentence of one entry and deleting that. Just do it little by little.....

Thanks
I only have to click on the mouse anywhere on the screen near the entries and the whole lot goes blank.
As an experiment I deleted a full stop somewhere else but as it did not ask for my password the full stop remained on the site afterwards.
