Yeah, I heard of it, but it seems like a joke or a PR stunt to me.

I don't know much about the Google page rank system, but to me it seems to put legitimate business up top of a search.

Remember the Search King lawsuit? Google wins. What we have here is one poorly run business (KinderStart ) versus one arrogant business (Google). KinderStart is trying to impose their business plan upon Google. Why should company #1 be allowed to dictate the business plan of company #2? It's not like Google singled KinderStart out... they were whacked with thousands of other sites by an algo change designed to make their product better.
If it does happen, and KinderStart is hard coded into the #1 spot for their name - I'm next in line for a couple of my business domains which happen to be the most common search terms for their categories.

Agreed. I think it's also a sign of a desperate company. I mean, who in their right mind plans to run a business from FREE ADS? This smells of poor business management. Isn't Adsense and Overture an alternative?

Took a look at the site in question. At first glance, doesn't look that bad, nor that great. It's really just a bunch of links on pages you drill-down to, with a search fucntion sitting on top of it all.
I did notice some weird stuff, though. Using FONT tags. And woudl you believe I found BLINK tags?!?!? Plus three BODY tags at the beginning.
Also noticed one directory of theirs is called "bannerads" - that'll get stuff blocked on some users' machines.
Looks to me like the site relies too much on advertising for income!
