Webnauts Net redesign need your review - 3/22/2006 11:48:45
Dear co-members,

two days ago we have launched our new design, and we would kindly appreciate a site review.

We are aware that there are some things to be fixed, as for its markup, accessibility and usability, though we still would appreciate your review and your suggestions/solutions to make it for us possible to provide our visitors with a better user experience.

Check it out here: http://www.webnauts.net

Thanks a lot in advance for your kind contribution, making our web site accessible, findable and usable to all.

Hello Webnauts
Gee I wish you had said what you knew still had to be fixed. Don't know whether to tell you what I noticed or not now. Anyhow, at the risk of repeating what you already know :):

Colour contrast on top horizontal nav (white on orange and the focus style red on orange) is outside the normally acceptable range for accessibility. Try Gez Lemon's analyzer

Is there any reason why the focus styling (is there any?) on the Academy, Forums and Blog links has a different background to the other vertical links? That is in IE, but Firefox is just not picking up any styling on TAB at all and, of course, Opera does it's own thing.

Hovering and focussing on Password forgotten? causes a jump in the lower links/div in IE but not in Firefox or Opera.

Your container width of 46.8em works well in IE, but I think the max-width of 76% is just a bit too mean for Firefox at around 1024 when the text is enlarged. At 800 in Firefox your header background starts to repeat even at default text size. Have you tested in Firefox without using max-width at all? - sticking with the ems width would be preferable for this design IMHO. Perhaps the heading background could be a little deeper so that it doesn't start repeating at two text size increases.

Abbr and acronym styling is a hot topic and will probably never be sorted out for blind people. I'll say nothing more other than to ask you how many times a screen-reader user could/would hear Association of Accessibility Professionals?
quote:

<li><a href="http://www.accessibility-professionals.org/" title="Association of Accessibility Professionals"><acronym title="Association of Accessibility Professionals"><span title="Association of Accessibility Professionals">AAP</span></acronym></a></li>

Next time around you could consider having the content first in the source, if only for (supposed) SEO reasons.

Overall, it's a good, clean, semantic, accessible design and a very usable site. But you knew that anyway, didn't you?:)

Wow, what an in depth review by Spitfire!

Two things I noticed were that the slogan text in the banner looked a bit scratchy, and the overall font, while I'm a big fan of Arial, I just think in your case may look better in verdana?

Nice clean site though.

Nicole

Whitespace.

Add more padding to the page and allow more breathing room between and inside the elements. Right know it looks like the website is trying to suffocate me. You could also try decreasing the font size of the body copy just a bit and see how that helps it. See how Happy Cog did it.

That's by far the only problem of the design, other than that the website is wonderful. Your promises on accessibility and usability are convincing, you must be ten times wiser on those areas than me. I would definitely hire you. *respect* *respect* :)

Bland, I agree. But it doesn't hurt the company if it doesn't conflict with the intended message. The logo could need a little work, though. The logo typography isn't working and it's creating an unprofessional feel for the rest of the design. But I don't know if that has anything to do with the website.

Logo, logo, not the site design! :)

I won't comment on the logo, cause they may already be using it in brochures, company cards and so on. The logo represents the company, not the website. The website is the one that must serve the corporate identity, not the other way around.

Thank you all for your kind feedbacks. We are aware that our logo is horrible, and we want to have it match to the colors of the images of the site. Also we wan't the main menu orange gradient to have the colors of the site images too.

But we have not came up with a good idea/inspiration.

Does someone have any proposal/idea?

Thanks again.

I think simple (yet unique) typography would work. Just the word "Webnauts" with ".net" or "net" under it.

A suggestion:

Ela Demiserif Bold Caps ($19,50)

Use a different font for the "net". Something basic and familiar, like Futura. No shadows, no gradients. And do think twice about that overlapping...

Hope I am of help. :)
