Remote Desktop Web Connection - 3/22/2006 17:59:33
Are any of you familiar with the Remote Desktop Web Connection? I have spent many hours trying to get the Remote Desktop Web Connection to work. It will work on my home LAN, but not over the internet. I will appreciate any help in getting this to work. Below are some notes on what happens, what I have tried, and what I have set up.
  • I have downloaded and run tswebsetup.exe from MS. It set up TSWeb in wwwroot. Terminal Services Web Client now appears in my add/remove programs contol panel.
  • I have Windows Firewall turned off.
  • I have ports 80 and 3389 opened on McAfee Personal Firewall (although I have also tried disabling the Personal Firewall too).
  • I have ports 80 and 3389 forwarded in my Linksys router to the static ip of my host PC.
  • I have also tried putting my host PC in the DMZ.
  • I am using dyndns.com to get to my home PC over the internet.
  • I can view both htm and asp pages on my home PC, from any PC on the internet, without any problems.
  • I can view the /tsweb/default.htm over the internet just fine. However, when I enter into the "server" field and press enter then one of two things happen.
  • If I enter the "name" of the host then I immediately receive the "VBScript: Remote Desktop Disconnected" dialog saying, "The specified remote computer could not be found. Verify that you have typed the correct computer name or IP address, and then try connecting again."
  • If I enter the "IP Address" of the host then it "thinks" for about 30 seconds and then I receive the ""VBScript: Remote Desktop Disconnected" dialog saying, "The client could not connect to the remote computer. Remote connections might not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to accpet new connections. It is also possible that network problems are preventing your connection. Please try connecting again later. If the problem continues to occur, contact your administrator."
  • I have used canyouseeme.org to check my ports 80 and 3389. Both are visible.
  • I have used PortQry.exe and the 3389 is enabled.
  • I have looked at netstat -a in the cmd screen and the host name is "listening" on 3389.
I'm stumped. Any ideas on where I can go from here?

Thanks in advance,
Andrew

Sounds like you are getting through as you can view web pages on the remote accessed workstation. Just a left field thought....user permissions?

HTH and take care,

Brian

When I'm on my LAN the login and subsequent connection works fine. It's only when I try to connect over the internet that it doesn't work (using the same computer name, user name, and password). I don't believe it is permissions, unless there is something different about permissions LAN vs. Internet.

Also, since the web client uses an Active-X control, I've tried setting my IE internet zone to very low security (allowing all Active-X features) and it still didn't work.

Still stumped.

I believe the port you're missing is 443...

The connection is a secure connection (SSL).

Possibly the reason you can do it "inside" is that you are on a trusted segment.

You are "normally" talking to a different NIC (Ethernet Adapter) inside the LAN....versus the connection to the outside world.

We run the same thing...the only ports I leave open are 80 and 443 for remote desktop connection, and 25 for the mail server...

Hope that helps!
Tera

Aaah thanks. I just saw your post. I'll give it a try sometime. But I'm not in any hurry now. I've gone to UltraVNC and it's working fine enough for me right now. At some point I'll try remote desktop again, as I understand it gets faster screen refreshes because the screen is pushed to the client instead of requested.

Anyway, thanks again.

Andrew

So was it a b*%ch to get the DSM encryption plug in working? I have heard horror stories trying to get that puppy up and running.

Take care,

Brian

Nope. It was pretty straight forward. I only had two problems that were easily overcome. First, it puts the MSRC4Plugin.dsm and rc4.key files in the "plugin" subdirectory by default. You need to move the files into the same folder with the exe file. Second, using the viewer on some PC's or when running it from a memory stick (as I do) then you need to make a shortcut with the DSM proper defaults loaded in the "target" field of the shortcut properties. After that, it works great. At least that was my experience.

Can I suggest you hit the email button and ask him that way. There's no guarantee he'll be back on here soon.
