I know that with FrontPage webs you need to PUBLISH (and not upload/download files via FTP) to avoid problems with the FP Extensions.

Does just "peeking" at the web server via FTP cause problems? By this I mean to just connect via FTP to view the informaiton via the FTP method to see time/date/size and other folders on the server that you can't get to via the Publish command (Folders such as www.root, log, home, and annonyous).

Usually not. I have uploaded / downloaded before without hurting the extensions. Usually downloading will not corrupt the extensions either at all. It is usually the upload.

But we usually say FTP because most of the time, people tend to forget.

I shouldn't image so (though I may be wrong). If you're not actually changing/moving any of the files I can't see how that would upset it (though I'd think it may be best to use an ftp app other than FP's built-in one).

Edit: beaten to it by Corey!
