Add this page to the navigation structure to display a ... - 3/23/2006 20:29:13
Hi all,

:)

I'm in some dire straits and was hoping someone might be able to help me...

The chief geek of my company is on holidays and a disaster has occurred. I'm lost.... I really don't want to disturb his time off with work questions.

The company website has lost all banners. It’s live like that :(
No headers and footers with the requisite standard navigation stuff that was always there previously.

I did a search on your website, but I’m actually too low tech to really understand the discussions I found. :)

We're using version 2002.
The website is:
http://www.accesscomms.com.au/

In Frontpage where the banner should be it says:

“Add this page to the navigation structure to display a page banner here.”

I have no idea what it’s about, I have always worked from a template, and it’s always been OK. I don’t know what’s wrong now.

When I go to navigation view, I get the message

"This view shows the navigation structure of your web
To automatically add navigation buttons to these pages choose shared borders on the format menu."

OK I did that.
Still no cookie.

The C drive back up files contain the banner OK. It should look like this:

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h186/AccessComms/Bannersworking.jpg

But as soon as I copy the file to the web site directory, it reverts to this :

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h186/AccessComms/andbannersnotworking.jpg

Can anyone help me???
It's giving me serious brain damage.

Thanks guys

:)

I seem to have fixed that default page, (I don't know exactly what I did that worked, but I'm happy about it) but every other page should have this banner atop it, but they don't.

:)

I'm scared to try to fix everything lest I dig myself deeper....

There is nothing worse than having to annoy a chief geek when they are on holiday :)

Did you actually 'Publish' to your webserver from Frontpage, or did you just copy or FTP the files in?

It sounds like you have somehow lost the Navigation stucture.

You could try copying and pasting the file Spooky mentions in the following thread, from your backup copy that has the shared borders and structure working, to the one which doesn't.

It might help. But backup the old file before you do - in case doing that makes things worse and you need to restore it.

Hi Rubyaim and Kitka,

Thanks so much for your speedy responses. :)

Sorry about the delay in reply at my end - it's piling up around me. :)

Rubyaim:
I update the website by opening an already existing page on the C: drive, and saving it as say "zzdefault.htm" (or whatever's relevant) so I gots a back up if things go wrong. Then I change what I need to and save my modified version as "default.htm". After it's ready, I copy and paste it from the C: into the internet directory.

I don’t think there’s any FTPing or publishing going on. But I’m too n00by two shoes green to know.

Kitka: In my limited comprehension, I think that’s exactly what’s happened.

OK I’m going to investigate that link you've posted thoroughly :)
I’ll back up, (back up against the wall most likely!) and try these suggestions (I'm game) hopefully sooner rather than later I'll report back in triumph!:)

Thank you so much, I really appreciate your support.

Have the best day Rubyaim & Kitka, I shall be back soon with a status report!

Chris

Chris, I think that might be your problem. Your site has things on it that need to use the FrontPage wizzbang stuff like 'Publish'. Are you only keeping the one copy of your site on the web server, or is there another somewhere else? If only the one copy:

Open Frontpage.

Go to >File > Recent Sites.

Can you see anything there that looks like your web? If not, try > File > Open Site > My Network Places > click on www.accesscomms.com.au or whatever to open it.

Go to >Tools >Recalculate Hyperlinks and run it.

That may help.

If you are keeping a copy off the webserver, open that and recalculate hyperlinks.

When in folder view, down the bottom of the screen you should see 'Remote Web site', go there and with a bit of luck the connection to your webserver may already be set (you may have to use the chief geeks computer to see this).

Try a search here for 'missing theme' or 'missing navigation' and you will find heaps of posts regarding this issue.

I've never actually used FP Themes or Navigation but have been caught out copying a form into the webserver rather than publishing - took me days to realise why it was not working.

Hi Kitka and Rubyaim,

Kitka: Sure enough, as Spooky said in the thread you linked the "Structure.cnf" in the _vti_pvt folder was missing. I’ve copied it over. But still no cookie.:)

Rubyaim: Funny thing though, the copy paste method was the one I was shown here, and it always worked in the past??? But I do kind of understand how going Publish would make more sense (kindof)
but I don’t have a notion of how it's done.

I recalculated all the hyperlinks, all the banners are still missing. All the links work though!!! Happy Happy :)

I'm going to search the site for "missing theme" and "missing navigation" now :)

Just on the offchance this may help diagnosis, I did a view source from a pc with an unrefreshed cache of the site.

This is what I get:

Cache excerpt from when the website was healthy

<html>

They’re the same up to the point <p align=…..then they diverge drastically.
F rom the point I’ve cut them both off they reconverge to sameness again.

I’ve just included it here in case it helps ???

The chief is back on Monday (hallelujah!).

From what I can see now, although the banners are down, all the actual site content is up and links on the left all still work. This means customers can still navigate the site and find the things they need. It’s just not so aesthetically pleasing as it was with the navigation banners. :)

I’m still hoping to fix it before his return by following any instructions you guys give me, but if I’m too clueless to help you help me, and it doesn’t happen before 6pm (2.5 hours time) no huge harm, the site is now functional for the weekend. (I’m more the cad/photoshop/illustrator geek round these parts, so he’ll understand my incompetence with FP… )

Whether I fix or no, I think he’ll be pretty happy I found your forum. :)
He spends a lot of spare time researching all the products we use in search of bettering the site.

Thank you so much for helping, even if I’m not so capable of applying the help, I do really appreciate your time, and maybe, just maybe what you’re saying will dawn upon me with some clarity before the day is done, and all will be well. I'm game to keep trying if you are. :)

Peace, have the best afternoon and weekend.

Chris

It is easier to help someone mess up their site than mess up one of my own :) Besides, it's a quiet day at work.

Just for the heck of it, put the missing stuff back and see what happens, those images are the ones you need for the top banner.

So, replace

<p align="center"><br>
</p>
<p align="center"> </p>

with

quote:

<p align="left"><img border="0" src="images/t1%20(2).gif" width="734" height="30"><br>
<a href="corporate.htm">
<img border="0" src="images/corporate_button%20(2).gif" width="98" height="24"></a><a href="PRODUCTS.HTM"><img border="0" src="images/products_button%20(2).gif" width="80" height="24"></a><a href="reference.htm"><img border="0" src="images/reference_button%20(2).gif" width="88" height="24"></a><a href="CONTACT.HTM"><img border="0" src="images/contact_button%20(2).gif" width="98" height="24"></a><img border="0" src="images/t2%20(2).gif" width="370" height="24"><br>
<a href="default.htm">
<img border="0" src="images/home_button%20(2).gif" width="98" height="28"></a><a href="SITEMAP.HTM"><img border="0" src="images/site_button%20(2).gif" width="88" height="28"></a><img border="0" src="images/t3%20(2).gif" width="548" height="28"></p>

If I'm reading it correctly, that code should be resident in the top shared border, not on a page.

In the live site go to the folder called _borders and open the file called top.htm

If it is empty, you'll need to restore a copy of that from your backup copy of the site.

NB. The _borders folder is usually hidden by default, so you might need to change the FP setting to show hidden files/folders.

Good luck.

I just had a play with Shared Borders and you don't need to Publish to get them to work :) If you still have no joy after copying them back in to your _borders folder as Kitka suggested, check that they are enabled for your page(s).
From the Outfront Tutorials
Shared Borders
The top banner and the bottom nav bar, book search banner, and contact info elements of this site are Shared Borders. I can enable Shared Borders for an entire site so that the top and/or the left side and/or the right side and/or the bottom of each page will display the contents of a hidden file called "_borders."

I don't find the side borders useful, but the bottom border should be used on practically all sites because basic contact information is something that every Web page should have. Shared Borders enable you to add this kind of thing at any time during or even after the development process.

To enable the bottom shared border for your site:

In FrontPage Explorer, choose Tools/Shared Borders.
Check the bottom border checkbox.
Click OK.
Disabling Shared Borders on Pages
A bottom border will now be visible on each page of your site. There may some pages on which you want to disable Shared Borders.

To disable Shared Borders for a page:

Open the page in FrontPage Editor.
Choose Tools/Shared Borders/Set for this page only.
Uncheck the borders you wish to disable for the page.

You may also need to recalculate the hyperlinks again (it never hurts to do that).

RE: Add this page to the navigation structure to displa... - 3/24/2006 0:53:11
I'm baaaack

The _borders folder WAS empty :)

So I've put the back ups in, and would you believe in Frontpage at least, all the borders are showing, on all pages. But only on the default.htm in the actual live site show. No other pages have the banners.

Restocking the _borders folder seemed to automatically put in the html code that was AWOL, I think that's what happened anyway.... :)

Now you both know the full extent of my incompetence, I got 20 minutes.... to play with....what do you think?

Play it safe and leave her functional but unbannered for the weekend, or gamble everything and ......ummm..

I don't actually know how to proceed....

Have the bestest afternoon and weekend :)

Chris.

Did you recalculate the hyperlinks as Sally suggested? Especially on the live site.

Menu bar >> Tools >> Recalculate Hyperlinks

Well, the site is functional so you could play it safe or you could live on the wildside and try:

Open a page without the borders showing, go to >Format > Shared Borders and see if you can apply one (caution - I've only ever used this once, five minutes ago :) ).

I'm sure Kitka will actually have a clue.

You have a good weekend as well :)

Also wondering if you put the border files back into the folder on the webserver?
