OK, so there may be no coflicts *today* - that's not really the point. My point is why should one company dictate how other companys must behave?

Anyhoo - There are divers ways to rank a site and having valid code or following guidelines are not required. I understand that you (PageOne) know this, but I think the average OF member may be under the impression that in order to rank well they must do A, B, C and then D. It's not that easily scripted or everyone would be trying to rank in the top 10... Oh, wait, everyone is trying to rank in the top 10. So, the question is, how do you seperate yourself from the 1000's of other sites that are doing everything by the book?

There are not as many as you think. By the book leaves much room for interpretation and that is where people get themselves in trouble.

The guidelines are based mostly from the official W3 guidelines for html/xhtml/css. Nothing new there at all as those guidelines have been in place for quite some time. Long before Google and the others showed up. ;)

Study the guidelines, learn at least basic html and css, follow the suggestions from the W3 and do lot's of testing and research. :)

LOL - So true. I don't know if any of my sites actually validate - even though many of them claim to be...

Still, it's hard to beat backlinks and citations.

Because of that, I used to only worry about valid code if it had a measurable benefit to my site. I have since changed my viewpoint a bit about accessibility, CSS and such. I don't bother with them because my site will rank better as I have not seen any evidence that they boost my rankings. Rather, I have begun to pay attention to accessibility issues just because I think it's the correct thing to do.

I'm not necessarily referring to valid code although it plays a very important part in the overall scheme of things. I'm referring more to structuring pages for maximum visibility and user friendliness. The code doesn't necessarily have to be valid but if it isn't, it leaves room open for a spider to misinterpret what your page is about. One missing closing tag on an element that must have the tag and you may find yourself struggling to improve the performance of that page.

The measurable benefits of writing valid code go far beyond SEO. That in itself is another topic. But when it comes to doing it the right way, then you might as well start now and not have to come back a year from now and undo what you've just done. It will happen, trust me on this. I've been there done that and you learn from your mistakes.

Yes, Tina my post could be confusing. I was only trying to show you could apply this at the file and directory level. I should have stated that. My mistake, I thought it was evident but after re-reading I guess it wasn't.

By the way Brian is normally a guy kind of name.

Also just because I am a mod it does not mean I am right. it only means I have participated and been invited to be a mod. Some days can't even find my pants [;)].
