For all of you in the states... do you charge a sales tax? What in your client is in a different state? Also do you then charge a little more to make up for the tax? Thanks :)

Very definitely yes. If you don't you could find yourself in real trouble.

There are only two things certain in life. Taxes and death.

Seriously it's not worth it to you or your client.

Brandon - in Missouri, there's no sales tax on services. Apparently, it's different in each state, though.

If/when you get a customer, check out the state regulations (most have them posted online now) to see if you're required to charge sales tax. When you run across a state that does have sales tax applied to services, those clients will be accustomed to paying sales tax in addition to the price, so it shouldn't be a problem to add it. Where it might get tricky is when the sales tax differs by community. In Missouri, (again, this is only for goods sold, not services), the sales tax rate is different by county and by city.

Hope this helps!

The only time we need to is if we send the client a copy of their website on CD. If we ZIP it and they download it - then no. What does your accoutant say to do?
