New Personal Website - 3/27/2006 0:37:18
Hi Everyone,

My name is Sean. Im from Australia.

I am a one day old newbie to this site and what I have seen I like very much.

This is the link to my personal website http://www.seandmurphy.com/ .

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Still very new at this so would appreciate it if you didn't get too technical on me.

Cheers.

Welcome to Outfront bobbydazzla. First impressions, your site has significant side to side scrolling at 1024 x 768 (which is what 50% + of the populations uses). Your picture galleries don't work correctly in Firefox causing the scrolling to be even worse on pages containing them (which is many). Lastly, I'm afraid I'm not going to install anything on my machine to view your site.:)

The links that you give to CNET don't work, you should check and correct them. You said that you created the site in 4 days - some of us take a lot longer than that, but they work in most browers, if not all. You have the makings of a nice site so it would pay you to stick around here and use the tutorials on this site (narrow blue bar at the top of the pages) to learn and improve as you go.

Welcome to OF,
Cheers
Carol

Hi Mike, caz and Donkey,

Thanks for taking time out to check out my site and thankyou for your input.
Mike not sure what happened with my picture pages. They were all out of whack when I checked them after your post. Hopefully all good now (they seem good to me but hey :)). Also trying to limit the side to side scrolling thing.....still trying with that one:). Lastly I thought Java and Macromedia flash and shockwave were standard things to have installed on your computer these days?
Donkey :)...you didnt....ooops .....didn't get past the first line. Thanks anyway mate for your input.
Caz links are fixed and have been changed so they open a new window now. I am not sure how to check the browser compatibility issue yet but am working on it. Thanks for the tip.:).

Once again a big thank you and hopefully talk to you all again in the not too distant future.

cheers,

Sean

Sean, any website that thanks Mum has to get 100 / 100 points :)

Your personal pages are just that, personal, so set them up any old way you like as long as you are happy. Keep in mind that not everyone thinks Flash etc should be standard installs :) But, if you and your mates are happy with it do whatever.

I think that you have a couple of pages that you are using for business though? Like the 'The Can Do Man' and 'A Brief Glimpse'?

If these are for business then it would be well worth working on them a little bit more to make them more professional in appearance, eg ditch the background, make them look good on all browsers and all screen resolutions etc.

If you would like to go this way then, as Caz mentioned, the Tutorials here are a great starting point.

It sounds like you are really enjoying building your site and that is wonderful, with enthusiasm, and FireFox installed with the developer toolbars to start with, anything can be achieved :)

Hi Sally,

Thanks for the nice input :) and advice. Time to try firefox again. I installed it awhile ago and tried it out and thought it was ok but reverted back to IE for some reason which I have since forgot. Interesting to see the standard extensions that they offer:).

cheers

Sean, using Firefox shouldn't affect Frontpage at all, maybe it is your Firewall? Give permissions to FP and/or Firefox in the firewall.

Hi caz,

was using "FrontPage or share services" option but wont let me access that now. I can upload using FTP option but takes a long time. I checked host site and for some reason the Front Page Server Extensions option had been disabled......I didn't do this??.....anyway I enabled it again but still cannot upload to host or can but only by using FTP option.

:)

cheers

If you are using FP extensions, then by FTP'ing you may have corrupted the extensions. You may need to contact your host and ask them to remove and reinstall the extensions - or do it through your user control panel if you have one. With FP2003 you also have the option of server/recalculating the web (not hyperlinks) - you could also try that, but my money is on talking to your host.

After you have that sorted then you can try publishing your web with your firewall disabled to check whether that is your problem and not Firefox.

Glad to help, but next time that you have server problems you'd best ask questions in the Server Issues forum. (I only guess :) )
