Opera voice - 3/27/2006 8:10:14
This is just an amusing aside, but using Opera Voice to check how some text reads (please, please bring back Foxy Voice) I came across this rendering of css 1/2 as "CSS Half"...:)

I'd have thought that'd be more appropriate for IE-voice :) (half supports it... if you're lucky...on a good day...as long as there's an 'x' in the month...)

and yes, FoxyVoice needs to be upgraded for 1.5!

How did FoxyVoice speak 1/2? Just curious.

Bit of a problem about getting it updated for Firefox 1.5 I'm afraid. The developer has said the next version will be a commercial product. It was on his blog a while back - it seems he has wiped his blog and refuses to answer e-mail or other queries. His home page is no longer available to boot.

However, Fire Vox is more or less ready to step up to the microphone.:)

It's so long now since I had Foxyvoice working, but I think that it said, "CSS one slash two". I tried Fire Vox again but it is very clunky still, so I will have to continue firing up Opera as and when, I think. :)

Caz
I've just tried three commercial screen-readers on 1/2 :
JAWS (world leader, huh!) says "half", Window-Eyes (world #2 according to some) says"one, pause, two", Hal (according to the developers #1 in the UK) says "half". Of course all of them have very well hidden options for the user to select the verbosity or how much/what is read out. Few users delve that deep.
Screen-reader emulators like FoxyVoice are just that - their developer's emulation or idea of what an actual screen-reader might say, perhaps, sometimes, with a following wind :).

Thanks for the testing, Spitfire. It really was just a trivial comment of mine. :)

I really like the Opera voice feature. I had a chance to compare its performance against the performance of Jaws, the IBM home reader, and a couple of others (with their default settings) and the performance is really quite accurate. Opera is in my tool box for that reason more than any other. I do, also, really like its RSS reader.

Just found that an extra drive that still has Fx 1.0.4 on it with a working FoxyVoice and it does indeed say "One half", not "one" pause "two". So it's not as clever as I thought. :)
