Fonts in navigation bar - 3/27/2006 14:46:02
I've tried everything I can think of to change the font of my vertical navigation bar. I've removed the theme and then reapplied it. I've changed the theme and saved under a new name. But those fonts are just STUCK there. Any ideas?

Are you talking about the left nav on the page provided in the link?

They look like images to me and hence you'd have to use an image editing program. Are we talking about the image I've attached?

Yes, that's the item I'm talking about.

What I don't understand is this: I changed the font from the original theme's font by customizing the graphics of the theme. I changed it to Comic Sans. But now I can't change it to anything else.

Have you tried opening a copy in MS Paint or another image editing tool? I don't work with themes but I'm quite certain themes don't change the font in a graphic.

Once it is part of the graphic (as in your button graphic) it is no longer a font per se, but now is an image and must be editied with the appropriate tool.

That help any?

I'm not sure I have the know-how to change the font with an image editor. (I know, I know..DUH!) I can try.

But FrontPage themes menus do allow for change of font in the navigation bar - that's how I changed the font initially. I guess that's what's bugging me now.

Thank you for your time. I'll give it a shot!

Again, I'm not very familiar with themes and I apologize if I led you astray. However, I didn't see that as being the case in this situation - they just came as images to my browser. Hmmm....

No apology necessary. I posted this on another Front Page forum and NOBODY could solve the problem! Sheesh....

I'll keep playing around with it. (Either that or just fugedabout it and live with the font as is.)

The way I change the font in a nav bar theme is to open a page that uses the theme. Then do Format > Theme > Customize > Graphics > Select "Vertical Navigation" > Click the "Font" tab. > Select new font. > Save.

Is that the process you're using?

Yes! That's exactly what I'm doing. I SWEAR - I've done it over and over and I just can't change the darn thing. It's changed on my computer (local copy) - but doesn't show up as changed on the remote copy.

??

The problem is that FP does not know when a graphics file has been updated. It only publishes changed pages and new grahpics by default.

Try opening the site live and making the change there.

File > Open Web > http://www.www.barboconnor.com > userID/pw > OK.

Then do follow the same procedure on the live version that you followed on the local version. All will be well.

I'm tearing my hair out here. I did a live update, as you suggested. I could SEE the new font right before my very eyes. But then when I closed out of FP and brought up the site, it's still showing the old font. What the????

Any other ideas?

It could be that you're viewing cached images.

With the live page open in FP, click the "Preview in Browser" button just to the left of the printer button on the FP standard toolbar.

Also, try changing some of the button names. And try a different font.

Nothing is working. I cleared my cache. I changed button names. I even changed the font to italic to make sure it was different enough to be obvious. But I'm STILL seeing the old font.

when you look at the site - are the navigation bar fonts italic? Or do they look like Comic Sans bold?

It's not italic. I don't believe the font I'm seeing is Comic Sans either.

It's been many years since I have heard of this, but I do recall dealing with this kind of thing before. I recall that I solved the problem, but I do not recall the fix at this time.

Just to humor me, try changing the font to Verdana and not bold. I'm going offline for the day, but I'll get back onto this tomorrow morning. I'm sure this can be fixed.

Okay, consider yourself humored. :)

I changed it to Verdana bold - not italic.

But it's still not showing up online.

Grrrrrrrrr

Try doing tools > recalculate hyperlinks on the live site?

Tried that (recalculate hyperlinks on live site) - no go.

Sigh.....

Shall I admit defeat?

Send me an email, and I'll set up a place for you to publish to a different server. It would be interesting to see if you have the same problem wherever you publish.
