Type with transparent Background - 3/29/2006 18:57:06
I have an existing page that has a graduated background. Please look at this web page that is a test site splash page. www.lakeerieislandstrade.com I would like to use the script type that lists the products, Teas, Coffees, etc. under the heading, on the side of the page that I can link from to other pages. I assumed that I could take the script type and work through photoshop to create a new transparent layer, add the type, and then simply go to "save to web" as a GIF and place it in the existing page as a new layer to link from. I can't get a clean rendering of type. As a GIF, there are white pixels around the black type when I add it to the page as a new layer. The type is originally placed on a transparent layer at 14 pt. I have tried PNG, but when I place the image, I don't get type but a white box that surrounds a smaller black box. What is the proper way to get the detail in type as a GIF, PNG or JPEG on the page. I have tried every combination of dithering, perceptual, every combination to try to simply lay clean copy on the background. As you see the page that opens, I did the entire page in Photoshop and simply imported it fully to Front Page. Now I would like to place type on it for more pages to link to. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

When you create your gif of that text, do it on a background color that is as close to the existing background color as possible. When you make it transparent, those same white pixels will now be that orange-ish color and you'll never know the difference.

I appreciate your suggestion, however the problem I have is the background is graduated. I seem to have painted myself into a corner. Another site I've published had a solid background and I approached the issue just as you mentioned. Along with the problem of the graduated background, I would still like to know what is the best format of PNG8, PNG24, GIF, JPG, and what settings for them to use to preserve subtle detail and gradations. Thank you
