Mango Himself -> Help on Safari (4/2/2006 21:55:42)

hi everyone

just a quick one:

is Safari able to show websites as FF or IE? One of my customers wouls like to see his new site (HTML, Flash) equally in IE and Safari. Now, a few of the features visible on IE, Opera and FF aren't visible in Safari.

I know that happens but my real question is, about what percentage browse the web with Safari? Anyone know of a reliable source for statistics?

Thanks

Kitka -> RE: Help on Safari (4/2/2006 23:23:23)

Some stats here:

http://marketshare.hitslink.com/report.aspx?qprid=0

But you can't read too much into them, as they will vary widely according to the audience the site is aimed at.

For instance, I'm sure that OutFront forums has a much higher usage of Firefox than average.

One of our sites shows Safari at 13.7% for March 06, but that is because the type of products offered by the business, appeal to the type of people who tend to use Macs.

Kitka

thank you for the help!

You are indeed correct. Based on the users, stats are usually quite diverse.

Thanks again

Safari is a lovely, standard compliant browser. In my experience, if it works properly in FF then it will work properly in Safari. Every browser has it's own quirks but to be honest, off the top of my head I can't think of a problem that I've run into with Safari.

d a v e -> RE: Help on Safari (4/3/2006 3:40:04)

i've had problems before with safari: too many giraffes, not enough lions; wrong sort of elephant gun. that kind of thing ;)

jaybee -> RE: Help on Safari (4/3/2006 10:22:45)

I said it before, I'll say it again.......

Nothing changes round here just some people's jokes get worse. [:D]

Mango Himself -> RE: Help on Safari (4/3/2006 12:52:55)

HI Helena,

thanks for the help. Would it be safe then to asume that if a site is quite functional in FF it ought to perform acceptably well in Safari? One more. I am using FF (and like it a lot) but what is the main reason so many members of this forum use it?

Dave, regarding Safari, where do I begin? Mosquitoes, heat, dust, etc No site can put up with that

Gill Since I am new to the site, all jokes are new to me Actually, it's not the advise but the jokes that keep me coming back LOL

Thanks guys

jaybee -> RE: Help on Safari (4/3/2006 13:58:23)

Well what an insult! You think our advice is better than our jokes!!!! [:D]

Hmmmmm, actually, you could be right.

The main reason so many forum members use Firefox......

1. It's not IE
2. It's kept up to date with bug fixes on a regular basis. You don't have to wait for the next release.
3. It's not IE
4. It's always been a lot more flexible
5. It's not tied in to MS software
6. It is developed after by people who want to develop it, not people who are paid to do it.
7. It's a heck of a lot more compliant than IE
8. It's not IE
9. It has loads of useful add-ins
10. It's got a really cute logo
11. It's not IE

d a v e -> RE: Help on Safari (4/3/2006 14:03:40)

we all bow to jaybee when it comes to quality of jokes because:

1. she's a moderator
2. see above humerous list
3. she's a woman
4. see above humerous list
5. she wears a blue cape with a yellow mask (still if my body looked *that* good in that getup then so would I)
6. see above humerous list...

jaybee -> RE: Help on Safari (4/3/2006 15:16:20)

So glad you remember your place my man. [:D]

And it's not IE.

I'd hesitate to say categorically that you'll have no issues in Safari if it's ok in FF - but as mentioned, I can't think of any problems with it either.

Also there's a nice new browser for the mac called Camino which is basically FF but native mac - and it's soooo smooth!

d a v e -> RE: Help on Safari (4/3/2006 15:32:17)

you can check your site in this as well (there's one for IE7 as well!)

Guys

you are just too much! I love coming to this forum! The combination of beautiful, intelligent, generous and witty ladies along with some very helpful gentlemen makes my job all the more pleasant!

Thanks again

Mango Himself -> RE: Help on Safari (4/3/2006 15:53:45)

Dave

thanks for the link. Just one question: do you know if there is a limit on the number of screen captures one can use?

d a v e -> RE: Help on Safari (4/3/2006 16:05:04)

i don't see anything that shows a limit - i usually use these things only in my template stage and possibly for a couple of stages therafter so not sure ;)

spitfire -> RE: Help on Safari (4/3/2006 17:27:14)

No limit on danvine although he has been known to get a bit sniffy about people who abuse his free service. Particularly when they don't acknowledge the time and costs to him with a little donation. And because of folks who submit url after url after url... the queue to get your screenshot can be very long.
d a v e is playing the game properly - submit after you are reasonably happy you have good/valid code and don't hog the service.

Nicole -> RE: Help on Safari (4/3/2006 17:42:18)

My new version of Firefox decided to shut down the other day (It does that), just when I was doing something that I NEEDED to do, or listen to do, or download (I forget exactly what it was), so I opened IE and did it there. Whatever it was took about 5 minutes.

I've been using Firefox exclusively now for a year or so, and Spybot Search & Destroy NEVER finds anything on my computer, but I ran it after doing this 5 minute task in IE and Spybot S&D found 4 things. That's another reason I use Firefox.

Anyone else noticed the amount of spyware that "slips through" using IE?

Nicole

Mango Himself -> RE: Help on Safari (4/3/2006 19:58:21)

Spitfire

thks. What do you consider a "modest contribution" ought to be?

Nicole (what a beautiful name)

thks for the feedback on FF. Makes a lot of sense to use FF. BTW, I still love your site. So neat, so professional, typical female (that is meant as a complement, not being sarcastic)

Hi Mango
Sorry I missed this one the first time around.
The point is really about abuse of the service. He doesn't "expect" a contribution, although that would be nice, but he does ask that people do not hog the service. Apparently it takes a bit of time to get the screenshot(s) up on view from the various servers carrying specific browser versions and a very long queue of requests can form because the service is so popular. This all came out on another forum when a service user started to scream at the site because his screen shots did not appear almost immediately. He had asked for about 50 all at once. It then transpired the service user, who was developing commercially and making a good living, had been submitting all the pages on quite large sites at the same time every time he made a change to just one of them.

But if you find the service has been valuable to you in your business or studying, then contribute what you think it has been worth to you. No need to go overboard a dollar (or insert your own currency equivalent) or two from like minded individuals every so often will help him to keep the servers ticking over and up to date and continue to be able to offer it as a free service.
