I almost got what I am trying to do with what I think is the fewest divs possible. The only problem left is that when you "restore down" the browser window (to a size where you need a horizontal scroll bar) and then re-maximize the window, the header and body divs won't expand back out unless you hit refresh. You need a screen higher than 600x800 res to see it and FireFox but I put it on the web so you can look at it.

This causes other problems too. Like when I tried to put italics in the nav links when you rollover - ever rollover caused the width to go back to its min-width for the header and body. I left it out there without the italics for now because I figure it is the same problem.

They're working as they should for me... expanding and contracting.

I'd avoid using italics in situations where the size of the text is critical - like in a menu etc - believe it or not it can cause problems with the layout going screwy, just because you use itallics. I know it sounds unlikely but IE sometimes makes the space the italic word takes up a lot wider than the same size normal font. (Just a thought - you've got all your CSS "inline" which will be much harder for you to update and takes up as much space as the "older" methods (like font tags etc). You'll find your life made easier if you bung it all in an external stylesheet - that way you can change stuff site-wide with a single edit.)

It looks like it was because I was in an older FF version. If you do it in 1.0 you should see it. But if it is only in older versions I don't think I'll worry about it. If someone takes the time to get a browser to avoid IE, I'm sure they take the time to do an update.

As for the inline CSS. I have the divs I'm using as external CSS. Right now, I'm converting a frames site to a frames looking CSS layout. Because of that the body of the code is what it always was. I'm going to worry about individual pages later. Many will probably be overhauled anyway.

If you go back up the url to http://www.positioniseverything.net/explorer/

you will be able to search for italics and that will take you to the page that Tailslide referenced. From my typography days it makes sense that more space/ width would be allowed for italics because they need it. The body of metal type had be wider otherwise the italic typeface would extend beyond the body of normal type and break off. IE is merely following print custom and practice - gee, I am actually defending IE...[:)]
