froghat -> Can FPE subwebs be located on network shares? (4/8/2006 22:22:42)

I work for a college, and we'd like to give users FrontPage enabled personal websites that are a subdirectory of their home directories (much like in Apache). That is, Joe Smith's homepage could be found at http://www.college.edu/jsmith, and he would also have access to it as \\fileserver\jsmith\myweb. When I create such a folder under the top-level site in IIS, it works just fine, but when I try to convert it to a subweb, that option is grayed out. If the content comes from a local drive (c:\jsmith as opposed to \\fileserver\jsmith...) it works just fine.

Is this working as designed or have I missed some important concept?

Thanks!
Bill

As far as I know - the answer is no - you cannot have subsites. But you should be able to have justa frontpage web if the FPSE are installed

Thanks, Corey. I want to be sure I understand your reply. Are you saying I cannot have subsites that point to network locations but I may be able to have FrontPage-enabled folders under the main website?

I'm not at all clear on the concept of FrontPage extensions. Users here want to be able to publish through the firewall using FPE. I don't care if their sites are subwebs or folders as long as they are able to publish to them.

Thanks!

All a sub-site is is a frontpage web. You can publish a sub-site anywhere you want as long as you have FPSE installed.

How is a sub-site different from a subweb?

It's not. When FP 2003 came out, subwebs became knowns as subsites
