Hard Drive Transfer When Old Computer is Fried - 4/9/2006 11:00:26
My old computer's motherboard just fried, and I turned my hard drive from that computer into an external hard drive for my new computer. I'd like to be able to access my programs (Microsoft Office, etc) without reinstalling them because my cds are all at home and I'm at college. I was wondering how to get all of your files and programs from your old hard drives if you can't use one of those nifty programs to do it.

Welcome to OutFront Derek112!!!! Well I hate to break it to you. If you just want some saved data what you did is perfect. To run programs/applications from that drive though that were installed prior will not happen. When you install an application it writes files to the Windows operating system, DLLs, registry insertions, etc.. You will need to reinstall. Take care, Brian

You might get luck booting from the old drive but if the first PC was a lot different than the new, you'll probably have problems when "trying to use the old with the new".
