Have I mastered CSS and SEO Usability or what!!! - 4/10/2006 13:27:38
Hello everyone,
I just redesigned part of my home page for SEO usability and user Usability. Trying to convert about 10% of users. Do you see any distraction at all?

Hi Albano.

Page looks fine in IE but falls apart a bit in FF.

The opening paragraph is far to long and will, I feel, put people off reading the contents.

I'll let the more knowledgeable SEO people cover that part of your question.

Regards

Well you're getting there and some of it is very good but it's now a sort of half and half.

You're using divs but your menu is in a table.
Your css is a bit strange in places example:

b, strong, em {font-weight: normal;font-style: normal;}

You're making all your emphases unemphasised.:) not sure why. If you just want plain text then don't use emphases.

Are you designing in FP and using the design tab? If so, it'll happily put all its own rubbish back in every time you add something.

Hi,
The paragrah has mostly junk text just for seo purposes. What I need is visitors to focus on the form and fill it out si I can get payed. I'm trying to make a living out of it not to educate the world. I still need to pay my bills:)

I'm competing with some guy that uses javascript redirect on msn for the term "mortgage rates" and I've seen him doing well using strong, em and b in this format. The reason I make the syle "normal" is so I don't distract users looking at the paragraph.

Seo usability: I'm using "div" to show SE the content first while users see the form first.

Do I make any sense or drugs are kicking in!!!:)

my 2 cents:

It may just me (I am into graphics) but the heading picture looks somewhat distorted. It looks as though someone had dragged it.

the logo looks pixelated and flat

Too much text for a home page.

If you already have a long page and visitors must scroll through it, why not make the body slimmer and allow the right hand advertisement to be read easily? I mean, the word foreclosures is split.

Why not put a larger sized link to The latest Mortgage News and avoid such a long page?

I also would like to know what exactly you mean by SEO
usability

I am sure there is a reason for having created the page the way it is. What's the logic behind it?

I can't get no: satisDistraction!!!
Need search engines to se <h1>, <em>,<strong>, <b> but users no need to be distracted. They need to fill out the form, so I can go on vacation again!!! On that beach behind me(on the picture), during sunset, while drinking Coronas.

Two things I'll say for you, Albano:

1 you've got guts to post your site for review here. They can build you up or tear you down!

2 we drink the same beer

I'm not good with graphics. I hired someone in (India) to make one and it was garbage, 50k, and lost the money. I'm trying to make images as lighter possible so the page loads fast. What I'm trying to do is combine SEO and user ineraction in the same time and I believe very few companies are doing that. I'm only by my self, I have little money for massive link building to understate page content.

Drugs are definitely kicking in!

Albano,

all I can say if it's only you doing that, especially if you don't do it for a living is: you are on the right track!!!

I wouldn't know the first thing about mortgages LOL

If you want, tell me which size you would like the picture on your banner to be and I'll make you one. No charge. If you use it, just enjoy it!

One last thing, the only other Albano I know is an italian singer who was married to Romina Power (gorgeous creature) Are you guys italian by any chance?

I'm originally from Greece, but now located in Seattle, WA.
During the '70s my father's favourite singer was Albano and this is how I got that name.

About the banner: It needs to this size: 760x85 and use some of this blue: #336699 my main color, and you can combine it with gray, red or how about if you do it the way you feel like doing it and let me know. I can't pay you but I can help you with anything you may need help in these matters that we're discussing now and forever, and ever, and ever...

Cheers,

RE: Have I mastered CSS and SEO Usability or what!!! - 4/10/2006 18:13:18
Albano,

Like Golfer, I use Firefox and originally viewed your site in that browser. First impressions like everyone else, it didn't look good in that browser, too much text for a homepage and overall the text size was too small.

Two things:

1. You have the text resizer on the page which is great, but in IE the text isn't resizable using the browser text resizer, so if people can't read the text to know that there is a text resizer there, they're going to try and resize it using other methods like view>>text size>>larger. This doesn't enlarge the text on your site though, use ems or px for font sizes, not pt. Give people as many options as possible.

Tip: It's easy to change text sizes in CSS, find and replace all 16pt with 1em, all 14pt with 0.875em, all 12pt with 0.75em and so on.

2. Whether that huge paragraph is there for SEO purposes or not, people have their own browsing habits and will do what they usually do with a site which is usually read a bit about it first before filling out any forms or anything. It might be a good idea for you to do some research into information architecture and also common viewer browsing habits before thinking you can put things on a page that yu want them to ignore and have them ignore it.

Nicole

So your father's favorite singer was Albano for a while? My father's too.

I will make you a couple of banners and email them to you. What format would you like? What do you guys suggest?

I don't know any italian singer by the name Mango. I know Zucchero (sugar) LOL Mango is my nickname and my favorite fruit

Ok, anybody has anything good to say???
Like congratulations you've done this all by yourself! (This is what my aunt said :) ) Unfortunately I did not study any english in my life and that paragraph is the best I can come up with. If somebody can rewrite it so it makes sense and use and keep the same keyword density I will gladly accept the offer for FREE :)

Thanks Nicole, ... For destroing my confidence... :), Just kidding...

JPG, gif anything will work,

Do a google search for "Mango italian singer" and you will see. Use to be very famous 7-8 years ago. Very nice music, very italian and chicks loved him.

Glad I can clarify things that I know

My husband says any site I do is great, but I don't listen to him because he's biased, I'm my biggest critic I think.

Albano, I hope I haven't discouraged you, you asked for critiques and that's what your getting, constructive ones from some very good designers on this forum.

Another tip: It takes time to develop a site, it doesn't happen overnight, especiallly if you're drinking Corona's!

and another one: Drink a gallon of water before bed, it might help wipe away some of tomorrows hangover.

Albano, don't take it like that! Some people in this forum are extremely knwoledgeable.
Nicole (the one with the beautiful name) is one of the best here. The lady knows her business. Believe me, a comment form her is extremely helpful!

Cheers

PS you are right. Mango. "Ti amo cosi" was one of his greatest hits. I wish Demis Roussos still sang.

This is already tomorrow and my hangover ain't over. I need to really make it "over night", because my wife is pressuring me about our next vacation. She's spoiled lately and thinks that money grows on trees...LOL

Actually she works hard too...

Questions: I don't have FF browser so any tips are really appreciated. Where do I really have to work. I didn't think that to much text will damage anything. I thought SE love text.

Looks better in FF, but it looks like the adverts down the right side are covering up some text (even if they're not, it just looks that way).
