rage2001 -> Child Domain Entry? (4/12/2006 14:49:02)

Hello, we own a domain right now:

let us say it was: test.ca

Now I want to register a child domain of this let say: steve.test.ca in my DNS.... so that I can setup a website pointing to it...

How do I setup the DNS? Lets say the test.ca IP isL 1.1.1.1 and the ip I want for steve.test.ca is 1.1.1.2

Once the DNS is setup do I just create a new web pointing to this folder and IP?

Thanks
Steve

You don't need to register a child domain. I'm not sure what software you are using to manage your hosting, but with cPanel/WHM, I would create a new account for steve.test.ca, and make sure that it sits on the 1.1.1.2 IP.

You just set up in the DNS steve to point to 1.1.1.2 . And then in Windows 2003, you can set up the headers to recognize steve.test.ca and point to the correct folder

well in IIS, I have the IP, pointing ot the folder. I have that portion setup. But I am unsure how to do the DNS... We are using Windows 2003 for DNS as well.

test.ca is already setup in the DNS. Now I want to setup steve.test.ca in the DNS, but I do not know how.

Thanks
Steve

Creat an A record (steve) and point it to the correct IP

rage2001 -> RE: Child Domain Entry? (4/18/2006 9:58:52)

I kind of have it working now. I have it working for: http://steve.test.ca .... but I cannot get it workign for http://www.steve.test.ca

I try adding the www to the CNAME, but I cant seem to get the Fulyl Qualified DOmain Name right... So it is not showing up www.steve.test.ca

I honestly have never set one up for www in front of the sub-domain. I would check out maybe an IIS forum. Googling a few tings seems to suggest the use of a CNAME.

Do you have an example of the www with a subdomain? If so - it might be possible to look at the DNS records to see how it is set up
