Check out the site :-) - 4/16/2006 0:37:35
Hi,

Please critique my site. Whenever I visit the homepage, or any page, it seems as if the top images start spread apart, and I see them apart, then all of a sudden they come together. Could somebody please help me on this?

http://www.thejump101.com

Thanks.

nice looking site - i like it! how about taking a better blue for the links say from somewhere in the gradient in the banner e.g. #307EC8 or #276BAA

Looks nice. My first thought though was, "what's it about?" Maybe I'm being a bit dense this morning, but it took me a while of clicking around to figure out what it was about. Ideally it should be obvious when you first enter a site what it's about and what you can expect to find/do there. Visitors make their mind up about whether a site's worth investigating further in seconds.

Just having a quick look I expect it's to do with the browser trying to work out all the colspans and fit the pictures into them. I wouldn't worry about it.

Nice looking site

I totally agree with you. I'm still thinking of a better slogan.

Thanks for the comments.

I'm still trying to improve it, graphically. It looks to plain now. I'm thinking of adding some more graphics behind the text itself.

I like the gradient effect in the banner with the wide strip across it - smart looking.

I'd switch the font-type to a sans-serif font like Verdana or Arial as they are much easier to read plus they would add to the clean modern look of the site.

Nice site.

However, you don't have a DOCTYPE, so you get slotted with pond scum.

Just the way it is.

What do you mean 'pond scum'?

At first I had a DOCTPYE, and I expiremented with different ones, although they all messed up the layout of my website.

I also added some images on the homepage for "New videos", etc. - what do you guys think of them?

I am now going to work on globally changing the font to Arial, and seeing how it works out.

It's a basic given that if you don't have a DOCTYPE you are lower than earthworms in the big picture. If your site shows OK across browsers without one you are a loser. If you put one in and it gets all juiced up and nobody can read your site, no biggie. YOU ARE VALID. End of story!

Now do the right thing and get that DOCTYPE back in there. NOW!

Hi Jump,
If you've already experimented with doctypes then you've probably already read the List Apart article on doctypes, but in case you haven't you can find it here. If adding in a dcotype's messing up your layout it's probably that you have depreciated or proprietary elements in there. If you want to try with a doctype, the HTML 4.01 Transitional fits most circumstances. If it breaks your page, then it's a matter of checking with the validator and sorting out all the bits it complains about. That said, if your site's behaving itself across the different browsers, I wouldn't worry about it too much at this stage. As many people have said, doctypes and validation are a means to an end, not the end itself.

Minix that is childish and unhelpful. If you have nothing sensible to contribute then kindly don't bother.

Jump, there are occasions where adding a doctype can send your page all over the place, this is usually due to using deprecated code. If your code is valid you should have no problem and, as in the case of this thread, you may even find it cures your problem.

Well, you guys say a doctype is vital, so I will add one. But I won't make an effort so that every page is wc3 valid:) At the start, I added a doctype and all, even made the page 100% validated, but certain pages were messed and some weren't, so it confused the hell out of me and I gave up with them.

Will a doctype still make a difference even though the page isn't validated?

What the doctype does is tell the browser what language you are using so it can interpret the page. If you've written the page in HTML and you use an XHTML doctype for example, or no doctype at all, then the browser drops into what is called "quirks mode" which means that results are unpredictable as it will do its best to interpret what you mean.

If your code has errors in it, having a doctype or not having one probably won't make much difference but if you find you're having awful layout problems that you just can't figure out then validating your code and using the right doctype may very well fix the problem.

This is the #1 problem you need to address now. When a new user comes to the site, he doesn't only know what the site is about, he doesn't even know where to go next. All you have is some updates and a poll, then “reviews”, “media” etc. You don't even have an “About” link anywhere.

Include a short introduction as the very first thing on the home page, or the “About” link I mentioned..

Other than that, good job.
