Need ideas - 4/18/2006 12:10:55
My "real" job is developing and maintaining pages for an intranet site for a government agency. Some of our pages contain material that is considered, "For Official Use Only". As a result, I need a way to show users when a particular paragraph or sentence is official use. The most logical way for me is through a different font color. Of course this will do nothing for our many JAWS users. I would assume others have had a similar need and would be curious to know what solutions have been used. I would love to assign a class that would do something like this:

<reading aloud>
Begin Official Use Only
blah blah blah blah blah
End Official Use Only
</reading aloud>

Haven't had to do this yet. How about just using a span with a title text saying "this paragraph for official use only"? and another span at it's end?

Edit: thinking about it - could you not have a heading which says "Official Use only" to start and then have the span and title text at the end of it saying End official use?

The problem is sometimes just a three or four word phrase within a paragraph will be official use so it would look strange to add a heading. I am also being told by our accessibility staff that JAWS will not read the title attribute in a <span> tag. I think this is going to be more difficult than I thought.

It's quite difficult to visualise the sort of thing you'll be dealing with. Would you be able to give us an example?

If you get stuck, then one of the best resources for this sort of thing is the forum at http://www.accessifyforum.com/ There's alot of accessibility expertise there.

Or ask Mike Cherim - he'll be along in a minute probably! (no pressure Mike)

I stumbled across some other pages on our site that have the same dilemma. What the author did there is add a small image before and after the official use material and put "Official Use" in the the title attribute of the image. That should work.
