Uglier - 4/19/2006 10:38:51

About every six months my website seems to grow ugly, like a beautiful girlfriend you no longer love.

It's probably me growing tired of the look, but I'd appreciate your comments, suggestions, ideas.

All comments--positive and negative--will be appreciated. About the look, about the text, about the message...anything.

I've reduced the amount of text already by about 75%, but it still seems to have TOO MUCH text. The website is visited primarily by prospective clients who have been referred to me by existing clients.

It's who I am, what I do, and how I do it. How I do it is especially important.

Blunt advice/comments are appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

This is probably not going to be much help to you Bill. I've just spent the last five minutes or so wandering around the site looking for something I'd change (I'm having one of those days when everything I do's going wrong and I'm making silly mistakes, and the web design fairy forgot to sprinkle creative dust on my pillow last night :( so it was a welcome distraction), and I have to say, it looks great to me. You've got a consistent look across the site that works, some great graphics, and even me (who has little interest in financial market type stuff) figured out what your company's about and what it is you do.

You've got a strong look that works, and I like the way the dark grey line across the background round the edge of the pages ties in with the line across the pages. It's a no-nonscence professional looking site but it's got a nice friendly feel to it as well.

The only thing I would change is on the 'about us' page where I'd wrap the text around the photo. At the moment you've got a large block of unused white space in the middle of the page that's sitting there looking as though there's something not there that should be. Other than that - good stuff!

In 4 years I've never noticed the grey line that ties in with the rest. Sheesh!

Good advice regarding the About US page; although I've never figured out how to wrap the text. It's probably a matter of clicking one little bitty box somewhere.

Now I'm motivated to figure it out. I'll make the change soon.

Thanks for the advice.

I'm a big fan of this central table style layout and I like the clarity of this site. The text is well spaced out, easy on the eye and encourages me to read more than the same amount of text on my own sites. I may follow your lead. Im not a big fan of this kind of structure though

I don't know how I ended up with that structure on the About Us page.

And yep, Verdana is more widely spaced than Ariel and others. It's my favorite, size 10.

I need to have a picture taken in a suit and tie; but the fact is, I did that for more than 20 years. Now I'm a blue jean wearing or casual look investment manager. I'll never do the suit thing again except for pictures (if I must).

I am presently redesigning a website for a young rapidly expanding mortgage/financial advice company in the UK. Their policy is not to wear suits and ties in their (open plan) office to make their clients feel more at ease.

They are so far very very sucessful

I wouldn't. :)

It's a really professional looking site that also conveys a strong visual message.

The only thing I would've done differently is used some other sans serif font for the text-as-images. Arial looks too common within today's corporate standards, and as a website designer your choices are limitless. I'd recommend either Gill Sans or Today Sans, but it could be any traditional sans-serif face. Just take a look here.

Also, the colors on "Services" and "Stocks" don't contrast enough.
