Site critique and advice please - 4/21/2006 6:09:01
Hi all,
Would appreciate any thoughts, advice (but no laughter) at my site at:

www.homesinspain.ltd.uk

In particular I think I need a totally different banner. I am thinking something more colourful or showing properties, or a montage sort of thing. But am a bit of a clod when it comes to graphics and don't really have any ideas. Inspiration is needed - any ideas?

Also, I would like the site to generate a bit of income. I have set up the googleadsense - problem is most of the ads are for my competitors. I know I can filter out these (upto 100 anyway) - but what would be better is if I could be advertising sites that relate to Spain and some services, but not to property sales.
Can anyone give advice on this or other affiliate programs etc.

many thanks for any feedback

I can't draw stick figures so graphics advice I have not. :)

I like the layout: 3 column freindly, clean, and familiar.

However, IMO the red navigation is just too harsh on my eyes compared to the rest of the page. I'd tone it down some if it was mine.

SimonCleaver: You don't have to change the reds. You need to balance the page a little bit: If you have a lot of contrast on one area, balance it by making some other areas stronger too. I suggest doing something for the header at the top: maybe make the logo stand out better?

One of the best sites I've seen this month is Sandisk.com. Look how colorful and busy they are, but what a perfect balance they have.

I actually like the red nav on the grey background and checking it with IE's Accessibility Toolbar for colorblindness it degrades extremely well to a sludgy grey/brown which is OK for legibility. The colours look classy and the graphics complement rather than distract from the content which IMO is the most important part of this site.

Nice site.

Silly boy... I check in IE and their toolbar ( made in Australia ) is handy for simulating all kinds of eye conditions. Where have you been :)

Thanks everyone for the feedback.
I too think the red is a bit bright, but I wanted to use a colour from the Spanish flag (and I can tell you in yellow it is painful!!!)

Any ideas on a new header?? The one I have at the moment just isn't doing it for me - far to bland.

I would also like to get the properties into a MySQL database so customers can search from one place - but this is taking me much longer than anticipated to setup.

Again - thanks for the feedback, its very appreciated.

Simon

You are rightly concerned about the banner, but only because the beach is empty. No one wants to go there. Dont forget in advertising, every one wants what every else wants. Stick some people on the beach and your done.

Sometimes borders frame things or sometimes borders can be effective in bringing componets together, like linkage. Perhaps play around with some borders to create a kind of framework. Unfortunately some browsers render borders differently so might need to test a few times. A bit pot luck this one though.

If their terms and conditions allow then maybe change the width of the adsense column to a little wider to fill the column it sits in. Im sure their code is editable.

A good site as it is though.

Thanks for that.
I can't get the googleads to change width. They have standard widths by the looks of things.

I know what you mean about the header - I am looking for an alternative.
