how to get quality backlinks? - 4/21/2006 20:55:20
Hi,
I get that quality backlinks are really important and that junk backlinks/adfarms are trouble.
So how do I go about getting good links? I've done a press release and distributed it via free press release distribution.
I've traded links with a few sites. (I think I could probably do more here - but they are hard to find/validate and many link only for a fee -which I can't afford).
My site gets mentioned (but not hyperlinked) regularly and often in very popular web communities.
What else can I do?

I belive backlinks are the most important part to promoting a site in the organic listings. Unfortunately, for many webmasters getting quality backlinks is difficult art.
- Press releases are fine and you *may* get a few good backlinks from that effort, but you never know. Obviously, a quality release on something of substinence has a better chance of getting picked up by quality sites. Expect the usually amount of scraper sites to link to you.

Free gets you *much* less than paid. The adage "you get what you pay for" certainly applies here.
- Trading links is fine, but it's not the best method as for every link you receive, you must link back. That is a pattern that is easily spotted by the search engines.
-Buying links is likely the easiest way to start, but you must be careful. Not all link brokers are the same and security on some of them is a joke. Basically, you don't want the search engines (Google) to know you are buying links for link popularity. That said, buying links can get you the backlinks you need to rank well.
- Networks. A lot of people get links from social networks. Instead of trading (recips) YOU link to Bobs site > Bob links to Jane > Jane links to Mike > Mike links to YOU. Repeat with other members in different configurations. This works GREAT and with enough members you can get a lot of milage out of it.
- Buying sites. It's kind of self explanitory.... you buy a site (hopefully in your industry, but it's not necessary) and link from that site to your site. Of course, you want good links on pages with a topic very close to the target page on your site. The advantage with this technique is you can link to other sites you own also - it's your site so you can do what you want. Place adsense on this newly purchased site and you may even make a few bucks off it.
These are just a few ways for getting quality backlinks.
As you rank higher you will become noticed by quality sites or people in your niche and they will link to you - this is where having quality content is important. The higher you rank, you more chances you have of getting even more links. The downside to this is that right now your competition is getting stronger each day. Since they are visible and you're not - they get the links.

According to a Google rep - that may have changed - a year ago! I don't usually believe much that Google says, but it is still good to pay attention because you never know...

This is where I never buy into what Google says. When Matt said, "Google itself solely decides", THAT is where I think they are spreading FUD. They want people to give up or not try as hard. They want to be the ones to decide where to rank a site. They want to run their business without any outside influence - something I think everyone wished they had in their industries.
This all seems to tie in with the theory that link placement makes a huge difference in passing PR.
When everyone is looking to the left you can be sure the attack will come from the right.

I absolutely agree with mojo on google policies.
Google wants the content to be linked naturally and that is what they are promoting..........
So we can be sure that if we do some quality backlinks, we are there on #1 page of google.......
Regarding blog commenting, i think still there are many blogs which allows do follow.....

nowadays there are a huge number of websites tht enable dofollow tags which are helpful as backlinks.
you might try those..
