Computer shutting down - 4/22/2006 21:57:00
I have a dell Inspiron 1000...it keeps shutting down randomly..i could be online or offline...no applications or more than one..it might shut down after 2 minutes or several hours....dell said it was a part in the motherboard and it would cost 310 bucks to be fixed.....anyone have alternative suggestions if it might not be the motherboard or cost to repair? thanks

I would check two things first:

Virus / Malware (spyware) and RAM. Below are some free ways to check...

You can download a great test program from Microsoft that will test your RAM and make sure it's working properly. Go to http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

First, try downloading both of these, boot into safe mode and run them, update/scan and remove anything they find:
http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html
http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/

Next (while still in safe mode with networking) and go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com (unfortunately you have to use IE) and run the free online virus scanner.

If those don't do it I would take it to a local shop and see what they can do for you. You can get a new mobo (motherboard) installed for under $100 (depending on your needs)

It could be a faulty power supply. If it is, they are far cheaper to replace than a mobo.

Could also be overheating so just a replacement fan. But always, always do a full virus scan with up to date signatures before anything else. Once you know it's not a virus, then look at hardware.

I'll ask the other half when he gets home as he fixes Dells for a living.

With the computer being a laptop it might be hard to open it up. But I would try to get it open and blow all the dust out. Check to make sure that the heatsink isn't completely clogged up with dust. And like what jaybee said, make sure the fan is working. Do you know what part they said on the motherboard?

Right, he needs to know.........

Does it shut down or does it reboot.

Does it do it on mains power or battery or both.

And he says........................

If the fan isn't running it doesn't mean it's not working it only starts up as needed.

Memory test and virus checks are good to do but no guarantee of result as this is random.

Ummmmmm something that just occurred though, if you look through this section a lot of people are having lockup and freeze problems with FP since the latest XP updates so if you're working in FP when this happens try and see if it also happens with FP shut.
