Accessible CSS image gallery - 4/23/2006 14:47:30
Yet another lovely bit of accessible CSS lovliness from Thierry Koblentz:

OK. Call me ignorant, but why would I worry about an image gallery being accesible to visually impared users?

I know accesability is a key issue with sites today but isn't this a little 'over the top'? :) :)

Noce code by the way but the accessability thing is just silly IMO.

Accessibility isn't just about visual impairment - you could be talking about people who can't use a mouse for instance.

Also in this instance the visually impaired do get an enhanced experience because they get a long description of the item concerned rather than just an image's brief alt text or title.

Yup, I know. That was my first thought when I had been struggling with an accessibility issue a long while back. Blind people can't see photos so why bother.

Then I spoke to a blind lady I was training and she loved to "hear" photographs. She had sight as a child so could form the pictures in her head from descriptions.

I know it's tough to get your head round. It's a bit like a top musician we have in this country called Evelyn Glennie. She's completely deaf but can play pretty much any tympany you can name and she's superb.

She "listens" to all the classical music for relaxation.

Guess what, her site doesn't validate. I bet she doesn't know that. I think I might have a quick word.

Oh Evelyn............

Here's a good tutotial which explains 5 different scenarios of people who need sites to be accessible in different ways.

Another thing, that slideshow is great, very much like the lightbox but with more features. Thing is, I don't understand all the reasons that we should make sites accessible, but if I come across something that helps people with disabilities and is stated to be accessible and compliant, I'll use it in place of something that isn't every time.

Another little story I heard on the radio the other day, true story from about a week ago. A 90yo deaf and blind man at the races in Sydney on Derby Day walked up to the betting window and said he'd have $100,000 on horse X at 5-1 and $10,000 on the Quinella with another horse. The lady behind the betting window counter suspected something and called the betting supervisor, but when the man pulled out $100,000 cash, they accepted the bet.

Can you imagine a 90yo deaf and blind guy at the races? He can't see the race, can't hear it either, can't even hear the crowd's excitement! He won by the way, over half a million dollars, now who'd have ever thought?

I don't know, I can't find anything by searching recent newspaper sites, I bet they've taken down the story after so many women were searching for it!:)

Nicole, I read that article as well, was in one of the papers on the weekend I think, either the Weekend Australian or Courier Mail.

Re the accessibility, I have to build pages to meet at least A and will strive for AAA, but also have to meet the needs of users who really need images on webpages. This photo gallery and similar things allow me to build one page that will suit most users :)

RANT: There is the other type of accessibility that is not usually covered in depth, and that is building pages for people who can not read, or who do far better processing information from images and diagrams than they do from text, and those who are not native readers of the language in use.

We have several users like this and at times it can be difficult to work out how best meet their needs - but at least I can call on these users to test pages for me and provide feedback.

I work with deaf people (sign language users whose first language is BSL) and this is a constant problem for them. Often their literacy levels are lower than average because spoken/written English isn't their first language. It's one of the WCAG checkpoints that's often forgotten - Priority 1, 14.1

Wrong on 2 of 3 counts huh? Not 90yo but 83 and not deaf!

Oh well, it's still a great story and helps to highlight that disabled people don't all talk about wheelchairs and being blind.

Funny though, I searched the SMH site using the word "deaf" and didn't find anything.
