swatt -> Renewing IP Address >.< (4/26/2006 23:31:12)

Okay, so I recieved my new Dell E1505 yesterday (Windows XP). I tried to connect it to the wireless network in our house; it will connect but I get an error where it tells me I need to renew my IP address.

I go through the whole thing of clicking Repair in the menu and it tries to renew the IP, but it won't do it. I have the password for the network correct and everything, it just won't renew the IP address. It isn't something with my wireless card because I tested it out by connecting to my neighbor's network just to see if I could get a workable IP, and I could.

Is there something wrong with the wireless network in my house? Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
~swatt

Without knowing any specifics about your home network...

You may be retaining an IP address from a prior session...

open a command prompt and type "ipconfig" (without the quotes) you will be shown your current IP address, subnet, and current gateway.

if these are way off of where you expect them to be...

you can type "ipconfig(space)/release" this will tell your computer to drop the current configuration.

then type "ipconfig(space)/renew" this will cause the computer to request a new IP address from the DHCP server.

If you get nothing, or cannot renew, I would look at the DHCP setup and make sure it's handing out IP's correctly. (IE. the correct scope)

Since you stated that you went to a friends house and linked right up, I would say your computer is not the issue. The issue resides with your DHCP...

hope that helps!

Just an FYI, you don't need a space between "ipconfig" and "/renew".

yup....I stand corrected...

no space is needed...

must just be a mal-formed habit of mine...

thanks!
