Welcome to OutFront Johnny!!! Well, I hate to say this on my first reply to you but.....neither. The SEs will see both domains as one long word. That being said don't get too upset as, IMHO, domain names are a small portion of the seo picture. I would work on getting links back to the site using those keywords in the text of the link. Also don't use the EXACT same link text for every site that you get a link back from. Rotate through 4 or 5 text statements. HTH and take care, Brian

Yes, but keep in mind not to go toooo far. Example: free-online-games.co.uk\game\game1 is ok. However: free-online-games.co.uk\free-games\free-game-1 is overkill in my mind. Also domain names still are a small part but not weighted as heavily as it used to be in the algorithms. Take care, Brian

well I've changed it to http://www.free-online-games-player.co.uk is it a problem that I've also got the site on the other url? I was thinking of using that one for testing.. what will the search engines think to that? cheers

Here's another viewpoint. I believe the SEs are getting much better at picking keywords out of domain names, even when they're all smushed up into one compound word. I don't know if hyphens are really necessary anymore for SEO. Another thing to consider: "Free" is a keyword often used by spammers and low content or low quality sites. At the very least, it tends to be associated with those kinds of sites. So I would wonder if using "free" in the name might become a liability rather than a benefit? If the SEs start penalizing or frowning on anything with "free" in the name (if they're not already), you would have to start from scratch again building up a web presence with another domain name, even one that was already pointing to your actual site. It's a huge job to go around and try to get all your inbound links changed to the new name, and it can take months for a new domain name to become established in the SEs. My understanding (which could be wrong) is that just because you have owned a domain name that points to your site, doesn't mean the SEs will go "Oh, it's the same site but with a different name now." They may be more likely to treat it as a new site and you're back to square one or two in getting your web presence established again. Just something to consider. Starhugger

very interesting, would it harm my seo if I have both sites up and running at the same time? at the momment I've left http://www.onlinegamesplayer.co.uk alone and am working on http://www.free-online-games-player.co.uk I could keep both up to date and submit both to directories etc... would it be possible if I tried to make them different.. I'm worried that search engines might think i am cheating if i do this?

From what I understand, the major SEs are starting to get serious about penalizing duplicate content. So having the same content on two sites, even if their names were not similar, could wind up hurting both sites. I believe the Big-G recently announced big changes to that effect (or someone published an article about this recently). Starhugger
