Just a guess here.... The OS query's the hardware and software prior to shutdown to make sure it's done / closed / completed... Usually (IMHO) you'll find some process that's crashed in the background, that can't reply to the OS's query for shutdown.... (This may happen due to a difference in the order you install things) The crashed thread can't say "yes I'm ready to close", so the OS tends to wait until it gets the ok.....but the ok never comes...so it hangs and waits.... Other than that, I'd look at Power management, sometimes that will cause the system to not fully power off on shutdown... I've noticed over the years, that systems with this problem will "restart" with no problem, however to just simply shut down they have issues... this sort of tells me that a different "state" exists during a restart vs. a shutdown...They seem to be very similar, however, they seem vastly different. sorry to get off topic a bit....
