Service Pack 2 bugs - 4/28/2006 9:45:50
Have a client that uses an HP desktop where the manufacturer has the recovery files on the hard drive on the D drive. Recently had to restore the computer for her and discovered that after restore the original OS was XP home service pack 1.

Went out to the MS site and let the updates do its thing for service pack 2 and all the security patches etc. So now after a couple hours of that the computer won't restart.

It just hangs when trying to shut down. The funny thing is that you can totally shut the computer down and then hit the start button and it works just fine. This is kind of a pain in the neck when reinstalling all the software. Anybody remember a patch for Service Pack 2 on restart? Have looked and looked at all the patches on MS site, but with so many it is hard to tell if you have the correct one.

Just a guess here....

The OS query's the hardware and software prior to shutdown to make sure it's done / closed / completed...

Usually (IMHO) you'll find some process that's crashed in the background, that can't reply to the OS's query for shutdown....

(This may happen due to a difference in the order you install things)

The crashed thread can't say "yes I'm ready to close", so the OS tends to wait until it gets the ok.....but the ok never comes...so it hangs and waits....

Other than that, I'd look at Power management, sometimes that will cause the system to not fully power off on shutdown...

I've noticed over the years, that systems with this problem will "restart" with no problem, however to just simply shut down they have issues...

this sort of tells me that a different "state" exists during a restart vs. a shutdown...They seem to be very similar, however, they seem vastly different.

sorry to get off topic a bit....
